Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gilbert Melendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Rotch (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Melendez's entrance music is Shinedown - Diamond Eyes. A fine choice. Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 2, fighting out of Los Angeles, Gilbert Melendez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mike Rotch!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rotch throws a hook but Melendez avoids it easily.

Melendez fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Rotch sprawls well initially but Melendez persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Rotch wants to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Melendez content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Rotch tries to kick Melendez off but Melendez keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
A big right from Rotch misses.

Melendez drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Rotch with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Rotch throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Melendez shoots in but Rotch avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Melendez closes the distance and clinches up with Rotch, looking for a takedown. Melendez pushes Rotch against the cage but Rotch circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Melendez avoids a punch combination nicely.

and Melendez counters with a single leg into guard. Rotch didn't expect that.

Gilbert Melendez has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Rotch throws a series of punches but Melendez avoids them all with ease.
Rotch jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Rotch uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Melendez has time to react.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Rotch bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Melendez's head.
Melendez closes this distance looking for a takedown but Rotch circles away.

Melendez throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rotch's waist but Rotch gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Melendez off to one side.

Rotch feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Melendezs jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Melendez throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Rotch was covering up waiting for the punch and Melendez finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Melendez wants to pass the guard but Rotch is keeping the position.

Melendez's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Melendez changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Rotch tries to avoid it but Melendez manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Rotch to the ground. Rotch escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Melendez shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Rotch pinned against the cage. Rotch gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Gilbert Melendez.

Melendez will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Gilbert Melendez.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Melendez, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
