PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Joe Downy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Max Jacks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Joe Downy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Max Jacks!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Sam Margolis and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Downy shoots for a double leg takedown but Jacks sprawls well. He's pushed Downy's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Jacks misses with the combination.
Downy keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Downy shoots in looking for a takedown. Jacks tries to sprawl out of it but Downy keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Jacks manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Downy gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Jacks shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

Jacks tries to score a body lock takedown but Downy shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Downy jumps guard and drags Jacks to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Downy wriggles free and stands up.

Downy forces Jacks back against the cage and clinches.

Downy pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Downy has closed the distance and engaged Jacks in a clinch.

Downy successfully pulls guard.

Jacks is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Downy is looking for a triangle but Jacks pushes his legs off easily.
Jacks wants to get up but he can't break Downy's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Jacks is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Downy is trying to keep Jacks in close.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Max Jacks.
Downy will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Jacks shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Downy's guard.

Downy working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jacks doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Jacks manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

That was a close round but I would say that Joe Downy will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Downy looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Jacks is fending him off so far but Downy persists. Nope, Jacks circles away and we're back to standing.
Jacks shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Downy as he jumps to the side.
Jacks uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Downy.

Jacks plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!

Jacks darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Downy wants to control but Jacks is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Jacks seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Jacks is just content to waste time from the top position. Downy takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Downy not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Jacks gets to his feet. Downy looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Jacks throws a head kick that misses.
Jacks shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Downy eats them both and turns towards Jacks to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Downy lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.

and Downy counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Jacks is breathing heavily.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Downy stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Jacks shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Downy as he avoids it easily.
Joe Downy has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Max Jacks.

Jacks closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Downy to the mat! Downy manages to get full guard.

Downy looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Jacks advances position into side control!
Jacks is staying tight to Downy's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Jacks in side control, throwing shots but Downy defends.
Jacks tries to advance to mount but Downy instead regains half guard.
Jacks wants to pass to mount but Downy is defending the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Downy trying to control but Jacks postures up.
Downy is looking to get back to full guard here but Jacks has managed to pass to side control instead.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Jacks decides to stand up, so the ref orders Downy to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Max Jacks showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Downy jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Jacks walks away with a smile on his face. Downy gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Jacks tries to work over Downy's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Jacks escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Downy keeping moving, preventing Jacks from controlling successfully.
Downy is trying to keep Jacks in close.
Downy wants to improve his position but instead Jacks has moved into half guard.
Max Jacks has got the better of the ground game so far.

Jacks content to control rather than advance.
Downy has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Jacks is working away from the top position though.

Jacks is trying to work for a kimura but Downy is defending well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Downy tries to get to full guard but Jacks has control of the leg.
Downy is refusing to be controlled, as Jacks sits in half guard.
Jacks is taking a breather. Downy says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Max Jacks was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Downy tries to pull guard but Jacks holds him up against the cage and eventually Downy drops back down to his feet.

Jacks with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Jacks is looking for a takedown.
Downy is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Jacks is defending well.

Jacks breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Joe Downy is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Max Jacks comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Jacks has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
