PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Tony McCarthy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex Matty (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Tony McCarthy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Alex Matty!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, William Gold and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Matty shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says McCarthy as he avoids it easily.

McCarthy moves into the clinch.

Matty breaks from the clinch.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Matty.
McCarthy shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Matty defends it nicely.
Matty swats away the attempt to clinch by McCarthy.
Matty throws a combination but it was largely blocked by McCarthy.
McCarthy really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Matty connects with a high kick.


It looks like Tony McCarthy has been cut.
Matty looks to score with a jab to the body but McCarthy is just out of range.

McCarthy drives through and clinches with Matty against the cage.
Matty is trying to pull guard but McCarthy turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Tony McCarthy has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alex Matty.
Matty changes levels and goes for a takedown here. McCarthy fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Matty throws a head kick that misses.

Matty closes the distance and clinches up with McCarthy, looking for a takedown. Matty pushes McCarthy against the cage but McCarthy circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

A frustrated look appears on Matty's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Matty blocks a body shot from McCarthy.

McCarthy breaks from the clinch.
Horrible takedown by Matty or perhaps it was just good defense by McCarthy which made him look bad.
McCarthy tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Matty swivels and escapes.
Matty waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract McCarthy.
McCarthy avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
McCarthy tries to clinch but Matty is having none of it.
McCarthy sizes up Matty with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
McCarthy shoots and misses
and Matty counters with a straight right hand.
McCarthy shoots in and drives through. Matty sprawls well.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Matty fails to land the takedown.
Matty should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

McCarthy closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Matty is trying to break the clinch but McCarthy has him pressed against the cage.
McCarthy has Matty pressed against the cage, preventing Matty from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
McCarthy presses Matty against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.
McCarthy fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Matty stops a takedown attempt from McCarthy.

Matty pulls guard effortlessly.
McCarthy will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
McCarthy in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

McCarthy gets to his feet. Matty looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
A looping hook to the body misses from Matty. McCarthy does a little dance to reset his feet.
McCarthy tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
No luck for McCarthy with that takedown attempt.
McCarthy is breathing heavily.
McCarthy stuffs the takedown attempt from Matty. Matty gets slowly back to his feet.
Matty keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Matty fails with a takedown attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Tony McCarthy will probably get the nod.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


McCarthy misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Matty darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Matty seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but McCarthy does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

McCarthy looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
McCarthy wants to improve his position but Matty is controlling well.
Matty stalling away here and it's allowed McCarthy to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

Matty wants to control from the top but McCarthy keeps moving.
Matty is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Matty pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. McCarthy is keeping the position for now.

McCarthy is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Matty wants to control from the top but McCarthy keeps moving.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Alex Matty wasn't active enough on the ground.

McCarthy pulls out of a head kick attempt.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Matty has eaten all the pies!

Matty jumps guard but McCarthy turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Matty stalling in the clinch but McCarthy improves position.
Matty drops to a knee looking for a takedown but McCarthy gets the underhooks and prevents it.

McCarthy manages to pull guard.

Matty looking to sit in guard and control but McCarthy gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
McCarthy controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
McCarthy missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
McCarthy controls from within his opponent's guard.
Matty is trying to control the position but McCarthy postures up.

Matty is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and McCarthy defends well.

McCarthy lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Matty wants to get back to full guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Matty has a hand on McCarthy's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. McCarthy takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
McCarthy avoids the attempt from Matty to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Alex Matty will probably get the nod - 10:9.

McCarthy takes the fight into the clinch.
Matty wants to get back to striking at distance but McCarthy won't allow it.
McCarthy tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Matty just stands there and leans against the cage.
Matty is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Matty is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.
Matty misses with a body punch.

McCarthy breaks from the clinch.
Matty goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

That's one minute gone in the round.
McCarthy tries to close the distance and clinch up but Matty swats him away and circles back towards the center.

McCarthy tries to land a front kick but Matty steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
McCarthy stuffs the takedown.
McCarthy slaps away a takedown attempt from Matty, before circling back to the center of the mat.
McCarthy displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Matty.

Matty is trying to force a seperation but McCarthy has the dominant position.
Matty tries to circle away but McCarthy has him pinned against the cage.

McCarthy manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Matty trying to control but McCarthy is working from the bottom.
McCarthy manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Tony McCarthy overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
McCarthy thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Matty holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as McCarthy tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
McCarthy throws some wild stikes that Matty manages to avoid easily.
Matty is looking to improve his position but McCarthy isn't that keen on the idea.

McCarthy throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

McCarthy has hold of Matty's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Matty manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
McCarthy looking to control but Matty is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
McCarthy avoids the attempt from Matty to control.
Matty sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Matty gets full guard.
McCarthy is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Matty has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but McCarthy has passed into side control.
Matty tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but McCarthy wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
A lull in the action here.

McCarthy tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no McCarthy has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

And that's the end of the fight!
Tony McCarthy showed his dominance in that final round.
I think McCarthy has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
