PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Glenn Swiftwater (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Riley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Riley has chosen Get Up as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. John Riley will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Glenn Swiftwater!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Riley!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, John Kavanagh and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Swiftwater fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Riley sprawls well initially but Swiftwater persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Riley regains full guard. Nicely done.
Riley is trying to keep Swiftwater in close.
Riley is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Swiftwater is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Riley is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Riley has escaped and now he's on top!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Swiftwater is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Riley gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
John Riley seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Horrible takedown by Swiftwater or perhaps it was just good defense by Riley which made him look bad.
Swiftwater closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.

Riley misses with a two punch combination.
Riley doesn't manage to clinch there - Swiftwater circles away.

Swiftwater feints and as Riley raises his hands in defense, Swiftwater changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Riley is on top in guard.

Riley wants to control from the top but Swiftwater keeps moving.

Swiftwater has his foot on Riley's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Riley works his way back into a safe position though.
Swiftwater looking to hit a scissor sweep but Riley is one step ahead there.
Riley working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Riley has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Swiftwater is proving hard to escape from.
Riley passes Swiftwater's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Swiftwater makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Swiftwater.
Riley stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Swiftwater swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Swiftwater is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Swiftwater wants to sweep but no luck.

Swiftwater controls Riley momentarily but Riley frees himself.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Swiftwater stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Riley swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Swiftwater wants to control from the top but Riley keeps moving.

Riley manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Riley stuffs the takedown attempt from Swiftwater. Swiftwater gets slowly back to his feet.

Swiftwater scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Riley is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Swiftwater off and has taken his back!

Swiftwater rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Glenn Swiftwater will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Riley doesn't manage to clinch there - Swiftwater circles away.

Swiftwater looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Riley!

Riley can't escape the position.

Swiftwater working for a submission but Riley is keeping him at bay.
Riley is looking to improve his position but Swiftwater isn't that keen on the idea.

Riley is in a horrible position here. Swiftwater smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Riley wants to control but Swiftwater is having none of it.

Swiftwater moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Riley has worked his arm free - good work by Riley!
Swiftwater throwing strikes but Riley manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!

Swiftwater wants to improve his position but Riley is controlling well.

Riley is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Riley wants to lay and pray for a moment but Swiftwater keeps working.

Swiftwater has hold of Riley's hands but Riley slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Swiftwater is pressing down on Riley's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Riley won't allow Swiftwater to sweep him here.
Riley wants to control from the top but Swiftwater keeps moving.
Riley pushes down on Swiftwater's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Riley is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Swiftwater!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Riley is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Swiftwater has escaped the position, nice work there.

Swiftwater throws an elbow to the body but it doesn't land.

Riley wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Swiftwater, who protects the arm well.
Swiftwater tries to bench press Riley off him but Riley keeps the position.
Swiftwater manages to get back to half guard.

Riley is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Swiftwater is just riding it out for now. Riley eventually gives up the hold.
Riley throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Riley tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Swiftwater.
Riley wants to take a breather but Swiftwater is having none of it.
Swiftwater has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Riley is working away from the top position though.
Riley wants to free his trapped foot but Swiftwater is holding on for dear life with his legs.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Swiftwater closes this distance looking for a takedown but Riley circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Glenn Swiftwater. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Swiftwater looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Riley is fending him off so far but Swiftwater persists. Nope, Riley circles away and we're back to standing.

Swiftwater drops back, looking for a kneebar! Riley looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Riley looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Riley!

Swiftwater is looking for a sweep.

Riley decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Riley tries for a takedown but Swiftwater circles away easily

and Swiftwater counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Riley's guard now.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Glenn Swiftwater.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Swiftwater, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
