PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kurt Cobain (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Thiago DeJesus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cobain comes into the arena with Smell Like Teen Spirit blaring out of the sound system. Thiago DeJesus acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the ring.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Kurt Cobain!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Thiago DeJesus!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Micheangelo Fripello and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
DeJesus circles away from the clinch attempt
and DeJesus counters with a big head kick but Cobain shrugs it off.
DeJesus checks a leg kick.
DeJesus throws a sloppy head kick and Cobain moves out of range easily.
Cobain moves in looking to clinch but DeJesus pushes him off.
Cobain fails with a takedown attempt.
Cobain is looking to clinch.
DeJesus shoots in for a takedown but Cobain shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Cobain shoots in and drives through. DeJesus sprawls well.
DeJesus throws a head kick that looked like it stung.


It looks like Kurt Cobain has been cut.
Thiago DeJesus seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
DeJesus wants to clinch.
Cobain tries to clinch but DeJesus is having none of it.

DeJesus tries to close the distance and clinch up but Cobain swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Cobain fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. DeJesus sprawls well initially but Cobain persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Cobain is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Cobain prevents DeJesus from standing back up.

Cobain stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
DeJesus shoots in but no luck this time.

DeJesus slaps away a takedown attempt from Cobain, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kurt Cobain. That's going to take a lot out of him.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
DeJesus doesn't land with the attempted body shot.

DeJesus manages to break the clinch.

Cobain gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Cobain gets underhooks to prevent DeJesus's takedown attempt.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

DeJesus trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Cobain looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Cobain holds on and takes a little breather.
DeJesus looking to pass the guard.
Cobain trying to keep a closed guard but DeJesus is proving a slippery customer.

DeJesus gets to his feet - Cobain follows without any prompting.

DeJesus throws a one two combo.
DeJesus tries for a takedown but Cobain sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Cobain looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? DeJesus is fending him off so far but Cobain persists. Nope, DeJesus circles away and we're back to standing.
Cobain takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
DeJesus misses with the combination.
DeJesus steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Cobain.
Cobain has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
DeJesus tries to clinch up.
Cobain takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
DeJesus avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

That's five minutes gone in the round.
DeJesus dives in and grabs Cobain's left leg, looking for a takedown. Cobain pushes down on DeJesus's head and hops out.
DeJesus throws a series of punches but Cobain avoids them all with ease.
Cobain moves in looking to clinch but DeJesus pushes him off.

Cobain closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. DeJesus quickly recovers to half guard.
DeJesus avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Cobain.
DeJesus wants to control but Cobain is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Cobain decides to stand up.

Cobain shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Cobain moves nicely into side control.

That's six minutes gone in the round.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
DeJesus tries to get back to half guard but can't.
DeJesus is not content to let Cobain control the position.
DeJesus really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Cobain. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
DeJesus is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Cobain off and has taken his back!

That's seven minutes gone in the round.

Cobain has his hands over his head blocking the strikes from DeJesus.
DeJesus tries to get the hooks in deep but Cobain pushed the leg off.
Cobain breaks DeJesus's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Cobain slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
DeJesus is wriggling around but Cobain manages to pass to half guard.

That's eight minutes gone in the round.
Cobain controlling the pace.
Cobain seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but DeJesus does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Cobain stalling.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Kurt Cobain wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Cobain circles away from the clinch attempt.

Cobain misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Cobain looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? DeJesus is fending him off so far but Cobain persists. Nope, DeJesus circles away and we're back to standing.
DeJesus throws a right and a left that both miss.
DeJesus works over Cobain's head and body with a nice combination.
DeJesus shoots in looking for a takedown but Cobain manages to keep the fight standing, pushing DeJesus's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

DeJesus moves into the clinch successfully.

DeJesus breaks the clinch.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cobain rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but DeJesus moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

DeJesus breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Thiago DeJesus will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Kurt Cobain's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


DeJesus throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
DeJesus fails with the takedown

and Cobain counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Cobain is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
DeJesus wants to control the action here but instead Cobain manages to pass to full mount!

Cobain has hold of DeJesus's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and DeJesus manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Cobain unloads with some shots from mount but DeJesus bucks and avoids them well.
DeJesus is breathing heavily.

Cobain wants to take his opponent's back but he's not managed it.
Cobain tries to control but DeJesus wriggling away.
DeJesus tries to reverse the position but Cobain maintains control.
Cobain content just to control the position here.
DeJesus working to try and regain half guard.

Cobain working for a submission but DeJesus is keeping him at bay.
DeJesus wants to control but Cobain is having none of it.
Cobain takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

DeJesus wants to use the ropes to get back to his feet here.

Cobain swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and DeJesus is now in Cobain's guard. A big mistake from Cobain there, giving up the dominant position!

DeJesus must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

DeJesus has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Cobain is proving hard to escape from.

Cobain is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and DeJesus defends well.
DeJesus working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
DeJesus trying to control the position from guard on top but Cobain is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Cobain utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Cobain has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. DeJesus doesn't defend quickly enough and Cobain has managed to lock this one up! Can DeJesus escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Cobain on a fantastic submission victory.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 5:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Kurt Cobain!
A determined Kurt Cobain didn't want to dwell on this fight in his post fight interview. Instead he was more keen to state he wants a title shot. Let's see if he gets it!
