Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Rob Shawn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jeremias Kurki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rob Shawn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jeremias Kurki!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Winston Howard and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Shawn gets a takedown into half guard.
Kurki is doing well to control the position and prevent Shawn from advancing to side control.
Shawn is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Shawn is looking to advance position but Kurki won't allow it.
Shawn is keen to just control but Kurki is a slippery customer.

Shawn seems to be looking for submissions.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kurki wants to improve his position but Shawn is controlling well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shawn trying to control the action but Kurki is working from the bottom.
Kurki is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Kurki has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Shawn is working away from the top position though.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Rob Shawn.
Shawn fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Kurki has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Shawn drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Kurki looking for a sweep. Not yet Kurki, not yet.
Shawn controls from within his opponent's guard.
Kurki trying to keep a closed guard but Shawn is proving a slippery customer.
Shawn stops Kurki from standing up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Kurki throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Shawn's waist but Shawn gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kurki off to one side.
Kurki tries to clinch up but Shawn circles away and keeps his distance.

Kurki closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
I wouldn't like to be where Shawn is right now.
Shawn is looking to reverse the position.
Shawn is trying to get back to his feet.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Shawn tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Kurki is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Shawn will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Shawn explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

Shawn gets a takedown into half guard.
Shawn is breathing heavily.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Kurki keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Shawn is trying to control. Kurki wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Shawn postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Kurki to stand up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rob Shawn dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Kurki tries to close the distance and clinch but Shawn swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Kurki has taken the fight to the clinch.
Shawn tries to land knees in the clinch but Kurki avoids the damage to the body.
Shawn has had enough of the clinch but Kurki keeps him there for the moment.
Kurki content to slow the pace in the clinch.

Kurki jumps guard and drags Shawn to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Kurki wriggles free and stands up.
Shawn swats away the attempt to clinch by Kurki.
Rob Shawn is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Kurki tries to clinch but Shawn is having none of it.
Shawn tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Kurki swivels and escapes.

Shawn drives through and clinches with Kurki against the cage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kurki using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Shawn has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Shawn gets underhooks to prevent Kurki's takedown attempt.
Shawn creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Kurki looks to throw an elbow but misses.

Shawn tightens his grip and picks Kurki up, before dumping him to the ground. Kurki manages to land in guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Shawn won't allow Kurki to get back to his feet.

Kurki is looking for a triangle but Shawn pushes his legs off easily.
Kurki is breathing heavily.

Shawn trying to control but Kurki is working from the bottom.
Shawn controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Rob Shawn.

Kurki wriggles free and stands up.
Kurki is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Kurki tries to keep at a distance but Shawn has taken the fight into the clinch.
Shawn is trying to pull guard but Kurki has him pressed against the cage.

Kurki is trying to pull guard but Shawn turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Shawn has clasped his hands together around Kurki's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Kurki gets back to half guard.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
It looks like Shawn is going to stand back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Kurki gets in close and instigates a clinch.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Kurki.
Shawn looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Shawn keeps control of Kurki as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Kurki can't get the takedown.

Shawn is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Kurki can't fight it off and eventually Shawn manages to take the fight to the floor. Kurki looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Kurki wants to stand up but Shawn is controlling him.
Shawn works over Kurki with some ground and pound from guard.

Shawn trying to control but Kurki is working from the bottom.
Shawn distracts Kurki with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Shawn wants to pass the guard but Kurki is keeping the position.
Shawn has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Shawn is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

We're going to have a standup here because Rob Shawn wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Horrible takedown by Shawn or perhaps it was just good defense by Kurki which made him look bad.
Shawn shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Kurki as he jumps to the side.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kurki moves in looking to clinch but Shawn pushes him off.

Shawn tries to pull guard but Kurki won't allow it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rob Shawn. That's going to take a lot out of him.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

Kurki uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Shawn.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kurki is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

and Shawn counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

And that's the end of the fight!
Rob Shawn showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Shawn, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
