PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Simon Fry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Spoon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Simon Fry has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Simon Fry seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Simon Fry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, James Spoon!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Colin Fotheringham and Donald Grub.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Spoon fails with a takedown attempt.
The fight stays on the outside here - Spoon looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Spoon has a takedown stuffed.
Spoon tries to clinch up but Fry circles away and keeps his distance.
Spoon uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Fry.
Spoon fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Fry avoids it really well and circles away.
Simon Fry has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Spoon.
Fry misses with a double jab.
Spoon tries to clinch but Fry is having none of it.

and Fry holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

and Spoon counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Spoon is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Spoon takes a head kick and shrugs it off.


Spoon is rocked!


It looks like James Spoon has been cut.
Fry drops his hands momentarily and Spoon takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Spoon is still on wobbly legs! Can Fry finish him?
Fry looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Spoon seems to have recovered his senses.
Fry plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!

Fry throws a sloppy head kick and Spoon moves out of range easily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Spoon fails with a takedown attempt.
Fry avoids the head kick by Spoon.
Fry showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Spoon.
Spoon slips a jab and a cross from Fry.
Fry slaps away a takedown attempt from Spoon, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Spoon shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Fry as he jumps to the side.

Spoon scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Spoon looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

and Fry makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.

and Spoon counters with a single leg into guard. Fry didn't expect that.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Fry wants to stand up but Spoon is controlling him.

Spoon wants to pass the guard but Fry is keeping the position.
Fry is wriggling around but Spoon manages to pass to half guard.
Spoon is trying to control the action in half guard but Fry is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Fry is trying to stand up here but Spoon is controlling him well.
Fry is refusing to be controlled, as Spoon sits in half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Spoon tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Fry swivels and escapes.
Spoon moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Spoon shoots in looking for a takedown. Fry tries to sprawl out of it but Spoon keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Fry manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Simon Fry is winning the standup battle so far.
Fry fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Spoon is out of range.
Spoon closes this distance looking for a takedown but Fry circles away.
Simon Fry has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Spoon.
Spoon misses with a body kick.
Spoon shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Fry sprawls well. Fry wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Spoon gets slowly back to his feet.

Spoon uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Fry.

Fry throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Fry uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Spoon.
Spoon moves to clinch but Fry breaks away
and Fry counters with a head kick. That will keep Spoon thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

Fry throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Spoon is looking to clinch but Fry is avoiding it.
Spoon tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Spoon manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Fry on his heels. He'll look to pass Fry's guard now, I'm sure.
Spoon loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Spoon passes Fry's left leg - he's now in half guard.

Still in half guard, Spoon seems content to control.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

That was a close second round but I would say that Simon Fry will probably get the nod.

Fry feints a jab promting Spoon to slip. Fry then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Spoon slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Spoon takes a body punch but keeps moving.

and Fry counters with a nice kick to the body.

Fry lands a big head kick that sends Spoon tumbling to the mat! Fry takes a step backwards and waves Spoon back to his feet - he wants the finish!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Fry will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Fry throws a series of punches but Spoon moves out of range.
Fry throws a body kick, spinning off balance
and Spoon counters with a nice kick to the body.
Spoon showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Fry.
Spoon shoots in but no luck this time.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Spoon.

Spoon will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

A nice leg kick lands there from Fry.
Simon Fry is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Spoon shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Fry as he jumps to the side.
Fry throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
James Spoon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Spoon dives in and grabs Fry's left leg, looking for a takedown. Fry pushes down on Spoon's head and hops out.
Spoon takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Fry throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
A head kick from Fry lands but Spoon takes it in his stride.
Good leg kick by Fry there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

Spoon misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Spoon on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
James Spoon has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Fry uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Spoon.

And that's the end of the fight!
Simon Fry showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Fry, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
