PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jose Aldo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shawn Shurk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Aldo comes to the cage accompanied by Run This Town. Shurk has chosen Achy Breaky Heart as his entrance music. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jose Aldo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shawn Shurk!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Frank Dennis and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Aldo dodges the punch combination from Shurk.
Shurk shoots in but Aldo avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Aldo delivers a nice body kick.
Shurk throws a right and a left that Aldo avoids nicely.
Aldo throws out a leg kick but Shurk moves out of range and Aldo only half commits.
Shurk feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Aldos jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Aldo lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Shurk leaves Aldo with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Aldo is looking to slow Shurk down with leg kicks.
A nice leg kick lands there from Aldo.
A combination from Shurk does no damage.
Shurk takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Shurk shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Aldo but Aldo pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Aldo loads up on a big right hand but Shurk slips the punch.

Aldo gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Shurk really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Aldo. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shurk is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Aldo bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Shurk's guard.
Shurk lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Aldo!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Aldo sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Shurk seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Aldo tries to get to full guard but Shurk has control of the leg.

Aldo had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Shurk defends it easily.

Aldo looking to hit a scissor sweep but Shurk is one step ahead there.

Shurk avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Aldo has his foot on Shurk's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Shurk works his way back into a safe position though.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Aldo not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Aldo utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Shurk postures up and lands a big shot to Aldo's brow.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Shurk must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Aldo walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Aldo explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
Shurk ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Aldo changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Shurk tries to avoid it but Aldo manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Shurk to the ground. Shurk escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Shurk takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Shurk looks to land a combination. Aldo sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.

Aldo gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Shurk breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Aldo fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Shurk lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
A punch combination from Shurk misses.
Shurk moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Nice defenses there by Aldo.
Shurk uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Aldo.

Shurk tries to bum rush Aldo with a series of wild strikes but Aldo uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Nice takedown defense from Aldo. No joy for Shurk on that attempt.
Shurk throws a right and a left that Aldo avoids nicely.

Shurk throws a hook to the side of Aldo's head but Aldo sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Aldo drives through with a takedown into Shurk's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Aldo cracks Shurk with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
A left and a right from Shurk both land. Nice combination.
Shurk has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Shurk there as he acknowledges the shot.
Sloppy strikes from Shurk. Those never looked like landing.
Aldo moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.

Nice straight punches there by Shurk. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Shurk.

and Aldo makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Shurk shoots in but Aldo avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Shurk can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Aldo controls the pace.
Aldo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Shurk swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Aldo is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Shurk is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Shurk is posturing up here but Aldo has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Shurk tries to roll out but it's too tight and Shurk has to tap! Slick submission there by Aldo!
