PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Regis Rodriguez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and IP Man (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that IP Man was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Regis Rodriguez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, IP Man!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Jonathan Paton and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Man enables Rodriguez to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Man manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Rodriguez with a flurry of punches that miss.
Rodriguez showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Man keeping moving, preventing Rodriguez from controlling successfully.
Rodriguez looking to sit in guard and control but Man gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Rodriguez is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Regis Rodriguez has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Man ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

Rodriguez scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Rodriguez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Man keeps working.
Man sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Man wants to get back to full guard.

Rodriguez is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Man doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Rodriguez.
It looks like Rodriguez is going to stand back up.

Man regains full guard. Nicely done.
Rodriguez wants to stand but Man has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Rodriguez knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Man on the ground.

Man looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Rodriguez trying to control but Man is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Regis Rodriguez wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Rodriguez bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Rodriguez takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Rodriguez is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Rodriguez decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Rodriguez is looking to take a break and control but Man is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Regis Rodriguez overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Rodriguez wants to stand up but Man has a hold of him and won't allow it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Regis Rodriguez.

Rodriguez throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Man tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Rodriguez is in Man's guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Man is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Rodriguez defends well.
Rodriguez is looking to pass into half guard but Man pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Man is in guard.

Rodriguez on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Rodriguez tries to get out of the position.
Man would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Rodriguez wants to sweep but no luck.
Man has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Rodriguez is proving hard to escape from.

We're going to have a standup here because Regis Rodriguez wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Rodriguez fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Man sprawls well initially but Rodriguez persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Man moves into full guard.

Rodriguez stands up and waves to Man to follow him.

Rodriguez fails with an attempt to clinch.
Rodriguez tries to close the distance and clinch up but Man swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Man scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Man lands with a hook. Rodriguez tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Man gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Rodriguez to score an easy takedown into full guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Regis Rodriguez dominated that second round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Rodriguez closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Man did well to prevent Rodriguez getting side control.
Rodriguez content to control rather than advance.
Man tries to roll over but Rodriguez keeps him under control.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Rodriguez working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Man's thigh. Man counters though and makes it back to full guard.
Man should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Man manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Rodriguez manages to get himself to full guard.

Rodriguez not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Regis Rodriguez.

Rodriguez closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Man to the mat! Man manages to get full guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Rodriguez looking to pass the guard.

Man is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Man wants to sweep here but Rodriguez controlling him for the moment.

Man scores with a one two! Rodriguez had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Rodriguez takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Rodriguez lands with a kick to the temple. Man shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"


It looks like IP Man has been cut.
Man swats away the attempt to clinch by Rodriguez.
Man scores with a hook to the body. Rodriguez takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Regis Rodriguez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Rodriguez misses with a left hand
and Man counters with a lovely straight right hand!

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Regis Rodriguez.
Well Rodriguez has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
