PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Nikola Filip (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Fernando Nurmi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nurmi has chosen Who Let the Dogs out as his entrance music. The key to victory for Nikola Filip has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Nikola Filip!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Fernando Nurmi!
The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Marco Blurström and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Filip rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Nurmi moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Filip tries for a takedown but Nurmi sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Filip closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Filip fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Nurmi looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Filip will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Nikola Filip seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Nurmi closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Nurmi lands in his opponent's guard.

Nurmi stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Filip swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Filip is working an open guard so Nurmi takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

and Nurmi moves into the clinch.

Nurmi turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Nurmi manages to end up in side control.

Nurmi tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Nurmi has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Nurmi decides to stand up.
Filip moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Filip tries to close the distance and clinch but Nurmi swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Nurmi shoots in and bounces Filip off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Nurmi won't allow Filip to sweep him here.

Filip isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Nurmi stacks Filip on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Nurmi!

Nurmi thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Filip has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Nurmi can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Filip is looking for a sweep. Nurmi is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Filip is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Nurmi pulls his head out easily.

Nurmi is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Nurmi has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Filip uses from the top position.

Filip drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Nurmi manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Filip has Nurmi in his guard.

Filip escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Nurmi gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Filip had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Nurmi is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Filip Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Nurmi's back instead.

Filip is looking for the choke from the back position but Nurmi is controlling his hands well.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! And we move into the final round!



Nurmi drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Filip tries to bench press Nurmi off him but Nurmi keeps the position.
Filip tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Nurmi presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

Nurmi jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Filip is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Filip and Nurmi has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Both of our modern day gladiators look out of it here - an gruelling 5 rounds of action taking it's toll on them, no doubt.

Filip goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Nurmi has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Filip but great work by Nurmi.

Nurmi is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Filip has escaped the position, nice work there.
Filip is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Nurmi off and has taken his back!
Nurmi trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.
Even with his hooks in, Filip manages to miss with strikes from the back.

Nurmi is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Filip off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.
