PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Roddy Piper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jonny Stevens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jonny Stevens told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Roddy Piper!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jonny Stevens!
The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Stevens gets caught napping as Piper dives in and scores a takedown. Stevens manages to retain guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Piper looking to sit in guard and control but Stevens gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Stevens postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Piper is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Stevens slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Piper is pulling down on Stevens's head to control his posture.

Roddy Piper has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
No luck for Stevens with that takedown attempt.

Piper feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Piper shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Piper thows a huge punch but Stevens dodges it nicely.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Piper stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Stevens swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Piper has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Stevens wants to improve his position but instead Piper has moved into half guard.

Stevens wants to control but Piper is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Stevens regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Piper.

Piper tries to free his leg and advance position but Stevens is retaining full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Piper throws a big elbow that misses.

Piper throws a strike but Stevens rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Stevens is looking for a sweep. Piper is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Jonny Stevens has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Piper fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Stevens sprawls well initially but Piper persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Piper trying to mount his opponent but Stevens defends it.

Piper seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Stevens does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Stevens is trying to maintain the position but Piper is very close to passing his half guard.

Piper not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Piper moves into full mount! Stevens won't be happy about that!

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Piper lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Piper looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.


Stevens is rocked!
Stevens keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Stevens is still in real trouble! Can Piper finish him?
A big strike lands for Piper! That's really hurt Stevens and he's turned his back - Piper keeps firing away and the ref dives in to stop the fight! Piper jumps to his feet to celebrate the victory!
