PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Storm (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Otto Alexander (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John Storm!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Otto Alexander!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Steve Erwin and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alexander looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Storm is fending him off so far but Alexander persists. Nope, Storm circles away and we're back to standing.
Storm throws a head kick but Alexander moves out of range.
Alexander steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Storm.

and Storm counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Storm throwing shots but Alexander is blocking nicely.

Alexander tries to roll over but Storm keeps him under control.

Storm is taking a breather. Alexander says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Storm winds up and cracks Alexander with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Storm works his way into side control.
Alexander can't do much from the bottom here.
Storm advances to mount.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Storm takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Storm tries to control but Alexander wriggling away.

Alexander is in a horrible position here. Storm smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Alexander wants to control but Storm is having none of it.
Storm lands a big shot there that rocks Alexander but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Storm takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Storm is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Alexander to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Alexander shrugs it off.
Storm cracks Alexander with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Storm working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.

Storm gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Storm dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Alexander swats away the attempt to clinch by Storm.

Alexander is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Storm trying to move into half guard but instead Alexander has managed to sweep!
Storm is controlling Alexander's posture.
Alexander wants to control from the top but Storm keeps moving.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Storm holds on and takes a little breather.

Alexander drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Storm manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Alexander has Storm in his guard.
Storm wants to control from the top but Alexander keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up because John Storm just wasn't active enough.
Alexander swats away the attempt to clinch by Storm.
Alexander shoots in looking for a takedown. Storm tries to sprawl out of it but Alexander keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Storm manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Storm.
Storm tries to advance to mount but Alexander denies him.
Alexander is trying to control Storm's posture but Storm avoids it.
Storm controls the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Storm decides to stand back up.
Storm is looking to clinch.

Storm rushes Alexander and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Storm breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Storm closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Alexander to the mat! Alexander manages to get full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Storm's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of John Storm.

Storm moves into the clinch.

Storm has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Alexander uses from the top position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Storm keeping moving, preventing Alexander from controlling successfully.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Alexander not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Storm escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Alexander gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Storm dominated that second round.
That's time! Storm's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Storm slaps away a takedown attempt from Alexander, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Alexander shoots for a takedown but Storm saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Storm drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Alexander working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Storm doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Storm manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Storm controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Storm has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Alexander takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Storm stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Storm looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Storm content to control rather than advance.
Alexander wants to improve his position but Storm is controlling well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Storm wants to work for an arm triangle but Alexander is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Storm knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Alexander on the ground.
Storm wants to stand up but Alexander has a hold of him and won't allow it.

Storm tries to stand but can't do so whilst Alexander controls his leg.

John Storm showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Storm has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
