PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Hans Lankari (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Riku Reipas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lankari comes to the cage accompanied by AC/DC - Thunderstruck. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the fighters buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Hans Lankari!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Riku Reipas!
The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Tarja Halkonen and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sloppy strikes from Lankari. Those never looked like landing.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Lankari.
Reipas wants to control but Lankari postures up.

Lankari stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Reipas bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Lankari is looking for a sweep.
Lankari is trying to control Reipas's posture but Reipas avoids it.

Reipas is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Lankari is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Reipas tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Reipas has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Lankari is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Lankari is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Reipas off and has taken his back!
Lankari trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.
The referee is taking a good look at Reipas as he is on the wrong end of some big shots from Lankari!

Lankari working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
Reipas is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Lankari.

Lankari is trying to stick to Reipas's back but Reipas is turning into Lankari. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Lankari's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Reipas.
Reipas is pushing down on Lankari's leg trying to pass to half guard. Lankari is fighting to maintain full guard but Reipas has managed to sneak the leg through.

Reipas looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The fighters are battling for position here. Lankari manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Lankari controls Reipas momentarily but Reipas frees himself.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Lankari holds on and takes a little breather.
Reipas postures up.

Lankari working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Reipas doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Reipas manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Lankari utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Reipas is looking to advance position but Lankari has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Reipas is trying desperately to improve position.
Reipas reaches up to try and control the position but Lankari seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Reipas rolls and tries to escape and now Lankari has his back!

Lankari controls Reipas momentarily but Reipas frees himself.

Reipas wants to control from the top but Lankari keeps moving.

Lankari is looking for a triangle but Reipas pushes his legs off easily.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Lankari uses the cage to get back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hans Lankari dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Reipas shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Reipas is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Reipas is working for a kimura but Lankari is defending it quite comfortably.

Reipas wants to take a breather but Lankari is having none of it.

Reipas is looking for a kimura but Lankari is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Reipas to get the leverage.
Lankari has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Reipas is working away from the top position though.

Lankari is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Lankari has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Reipas can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Reipas stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lankari swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Lankari is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Reipas defends well.
Hans Lankari overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Reipas wants to pass the guard but Lankari is keeping the position.

Reipas thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Reipas drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Reipas jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Hans Lankari just wasn't active enough.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Lankari stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Lankari feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Riku Reipas will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Lankari throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Reipas drives through with a takedown into guard.
Reipas stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lankari swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Reipas is in close to Lankari's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Reipas pushes down on Lankari's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Reipas is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Reipas is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
Reipas loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Reipas won't allow Lankari to get back to his feet.

Reipas has hold of Lankari's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Lankari manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Lankari tries to hold on but Reipas pushes him away.
Lankari is desperately trying to improve his position but Reipas has a good base and remains in mount.

Lankari is in a horrible position here. Reipas smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Lankari regains half guard.

Lankari is looking to control Reipas's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Lankari avoid being mounted?
Reipas trying to control the action but Lankari is working from the bottom.

Lankari is defending against the submission attempts here by Reipas.
Reipas is trying to control the action in half guard but Lankari is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Riku Reipas comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Reipas has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
