PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Marshall Mathers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shane Doby (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mathers comes to the cage accompanied by Square Dance. Doby has chosen International Players Anthem as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Marshall Mathers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Shane Doby!
The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, Robert Douchet and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mathers is looking to slow Doby down with leg kicks.
Doby tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Mathers is able to avoid easily.
Doby shoots in but Mathers avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Mathers tries to keep at a distance but Doby has taken the fight into the clinch.

Doby pulls guard effortlessly.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Doby escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mathers gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Doby wants to sweep but no luck.
Doby being controlled here, momentarily.
Doby trying to keep a closed guard but Mathers is proving a slippery customer.

Doby working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mathers doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mathers manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mathers passes Doby's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Mathers works his foot free and advances to mount.
Mathers controlling his opponent.
Doby is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mathers seems to be looking to move to his opponent's back but Doby is holding on tight.
Doby is trying to escape the mount.
Mathers can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Doby is looking to escape.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mathers tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Doby is desperately trying to improve his position but Mathers has a good base and remains in mount.
Doby is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Mathers can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Doby is looking to escape.
Mathers tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Doby is trying desperately to improve position.
Doby throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.
Mathers controlling from mount.
Doby is squirming around, avoiding Mathers's attempts to control the action.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Marshall Mathers wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Mathers swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Mathers throws a series of punches but Doby avoids them all with ease.
Doby throws a head kick that misses
and Mathers counters with an inside leg kick.
Mathers throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Doby counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Mathers checks a leg kick.
Doby thuds his right hand into Mathers's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Mathers slips a jab from Doby.
Mathers goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Doby misses with a double jab.
Mathers connects with a solid leg kick.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Doby lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Mathers avoids a punch combination nicely.
A shot to the liver by Doby. Beautiful body shot.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Marshall Mathers will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


A low kick from Doby misses
and Mathers counters with a leg kick.
Doby ducks right into an uppercut from Mathers.
Mathers thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Doby if he has to take too many more of those.
Mathers stuffs the takedown attempt from Doby. Doby gets slowly back to his feet.
Mathers clobbers Doby with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Doby checks the leg kick nicely there.
Mathers doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Mathers takes a swing at Doby's ribcage but misses.
Doby looks for a takedown but Mathers sprawls well.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Doby shoots in for a takedown but Mathers shows good takedown defense.
Marshall Mathers has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Shane Doby.
Mathers leaves Doby with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Doby scores with a hook.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Doby shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Mathers as he avoids it easily.
Mathers fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Doby is breathing heavily.
Doby tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
A solid leg kick lands there for Mathers.
Doby takes a swing at Mathers's ribcage but misses.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Mathers.
Mathers works the jab nicely.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Doby crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Mathers - the referee stops the clock and Doby gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Mathers. Doby manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Mathers drops Doby with a beautiful combination! Doby stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Mathers is looking for the KO!


Doby is rocked!


It looks like Shane Doby has been cut.
BOOM! Mathers lands a beautiful left hook that drops Doby. Doby tries to recover but Mathers is having none of it, landing more punishing shots from mount. One final crushing shot and Doby lies motionless on the canvas. The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:50 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Marshall Mathers!
After winning the bout, Marshall Mathers thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
