Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Toshi Ortiz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mike Gatner!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Jonathan Paton and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gatner closes this distance looking for a takedown but Ortiz circles away.
Gatner throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Ortiz connects with a looping right hand.
Ortiz keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Gatner looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Gatner shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Ortiz defends it nicely.
Toshi Ortiz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mike Gatner.
Gatner fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Gatner is trying to trip Ortiz. He has hold of a leg but Ortiz is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Gatner persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Mike Gatner hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Gatner tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Ortiz manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Ortiz throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Gatner tries for a takedown but Ortiz sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Ortiz cracks a nice hook into Gatner's ribs.
Gatner wants to clinch.

Gatner closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Ortiz is trying to pull guard but Gatner turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Gatner has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Ortiz is trying to keep an underhook but Gatner manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Gatner is looking to take a break and control but Ortiz is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Ortiz is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Mike Gatner dominated that round.

Gatner throws a low kick, looking for Ortiz's leg but Ortiz calmly moves out of range.
Mike Gatner seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ortiz clobbers Gatner with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Ortiz swats away the attempt to clinch by Gatner.
Gatner shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Ortiz defends it nicely.

Ortiz wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Ortiz tries to circle away but Gatner has him pinned against the cage.

Gatner works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Ortiz pulls Gatner in close to his closed guard and prevents Gatner from doing any damage or advancing position.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Ortiz has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Gatner can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Ortiz wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Ortiz is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Gatner is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Mike Gatner.

Gatner shoots in looking for a takedown but Ortiz manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Gatner's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Ortiz is persistently looking for the submission but Gatner is defending it well.
