PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ben Lewis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steel Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Penn is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Never Get Caught. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ben Lewis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Steel Penn!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Bruno Lombardi and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lewis throws a sloppy head kick and Penn moves out of range easily.

Penn shoots in and gets a takedown into Lewis's guard.
Lewis looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Lewis managing to control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Lewis utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Lewis controls Penn momentarily but Penn frees himself.

Lewis looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Penn postures up.

Lewis working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Penn has passed into half guard!

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penn wants to lay and pray for a moment but Lewis keeps working.
Penn should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Lewis makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Lewis.
Lewis keeping full guard, as Penn tries to pass.
Lewis is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Lewis keeping moving, preventing Penn from controlling successfully.

Penn controlling from the top position.
Lewis preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Penn engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Steel Penn was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Penn drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Lewis looking to control.
Penn stopping the sweep attempt from Lewis.
Lewis not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Lewis working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Penn doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Penn manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Lewis is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Lewis will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Penn pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Lewis is keeping the position for now.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Penn's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Penn must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Penn trying to control but Lewis is working from the bottom.

Lewis is pulling down on Penn's head. It's preventing any offense from Penn, at least for the moment.
Penn postures up in Lewis's guard and throws a big left but Lewis blocks it.
Penn controlling from the top position.
Penn trying to control but Lewis is working from the bottom.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Lewis trying to keep a closed guard but Penn is proving a slippery customer.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steel Penn dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Penn looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Lewis is fending him off so far but Penn persists. Nope, Lewis circles away and we're back to standing.
Steel Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Penn shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Lewis as he avoids it easily.
Penn fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Ben Lewis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Steel Penn.
Penn avoids a kick to the body.

Penn closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Penn lands in his opponent's guard.
Lewis is trying to keep Penn in close.
Penn looking to sit in guard and control but Lewis gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Lewis is stalling in the full guard.

Penn working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lewis doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lewis manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lewis passes into half guard.
Lewis has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Lewis content just to control the position here.
Lewis can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Penn is looking to escape.
Penn tries to get back to half guard but can't.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Penn can do anything to dispel that myth.
Penn is trying to reverse the position but instead Lewis has taken his back - oops!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Penn is really stuck here.

Lewis is looking for a rear naked choke here but Penn reverses the position brilliantly into Lewis's guard!
Lewis lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Penn!
Penn tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Penn tries to control the position but Lewis now has his back.
Penn breaks Lewis's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Lewis looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Penn trying to control the position from guard on top but Lewis is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Penn looking to pass the guard.
Lewis working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Penn.
Penn trying to control but Lewis is working from the bottom.
Steel Penn has got the better of the ground game so far.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Ben Lewis will probably get the nod.
That's time! Lewis's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Penn shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Lewis counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Lewis is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Lewis thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Penn regains half guard.
Penn trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!
Penn is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Lewis looking to control but Penn is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Penn is trying to escape the mount.
Lewis throws some wild stikes that Penn manages to avoid easily.
Lewis controlling his opponent.
Penn can't escape the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Penn is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Penn is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Lewis trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Penn sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Penn avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Lewis.
Penn is looking for a sweep. Lewis is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lewis frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Lewis tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Lewis moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Penn has worked his arm free - good work by Penn!

Lewis is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Penn has escaped the position, nice work there.
Penn is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Penn controlling the position for now.
Penn is trying to get back to full guard.
Lewis is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Penn!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Penn wants to control but Lewis is having none of it.
Lewis misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ben Lewis showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Lewis has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
