Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Juan Carlos Alvez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mickey Ward!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Daniel Cesar and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ward fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Ward throws a shot from downtown. Alvez moves away and avoids it.

Alvez closes the distance and clinches.
Alvez gets underhooks to prevent Ward's takedown attempt.

Alvez has Ward pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Alvez pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Ward tumbling to the mat - Alvez dives into Ward's guard.
Alvez is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Alvez wants to control from the top but Ward keeps moving.
Ward is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Ward is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Ward drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Alvez manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Ward has Alvez in his guard.

Alvez closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Ward has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Alvez escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Alvez!

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Ward wants to control but Alvez is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Mickey Ward showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Ward shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Alvez as he avoids it easily.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Ward enables Alvez to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Ward manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Alvez got a little sloppy there for a moment and Ward has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Alvez has managed to get both his arms back between Ward's legs - danger averted.

Ward is not content to let Alvez control the position.
Alvez looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Ward with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Alvez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Ward keeps working.
Ward moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
