PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Daniel Sypher (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robert Paulson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Daniel Sypher!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Robert Paulson!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Roger Salmon and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Paulson tries for a takedown but Sypher circles away easily

and Sypher counters with a nice double leg into guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Sypher gets to his feet. Paulson looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Paulson blocks a head kick by Sypher.

Sypher shoots in and gets a takedown into Paulson's guard.
Sypher looking to pass the guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Paulson is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Paulson stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Sypher to get to his feet.
Paulson bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
Paulson scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Sypher misses with a takedown attempt - Paulson sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Sypher is breathing heavily.

Paulson drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Paulson thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Paulson wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Sypher, who protects the arm well.
Paulson creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Sypher sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Sypher on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Sypher tries to get out of the position.

Paulson tries to score with some ground and pound. Sypher controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sypher is looking for a sweep.

Paulson decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Paulson throws a right and a left that Sypher avoids nicely.
Paulson dives in and grabs Sypher's left leg, looking for a takedown. Sypher pushes down on Paulson's head and hops out.
Paulson shoots and misses

and Sypher counters with a single leg into guard. Paulson didn't expect that.
Daniel Sypher has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Robert Paulson.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Sypher controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Sypher wants to control from the top but Paulson keeps moving.

Sypher manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

That was a close round but I would say that Daniel Sypher will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Paulson misses with a takedown attempt

and Sypher counters by moving into the clinch.

Sypher escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Sypher throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Paulson tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Sypher is in Paulson's guard.
Paulson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Sypher. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Paulson bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Sypher's guard.
Sypher scores with a couple of body punches from the bottom.
Sypher tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Sypher might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Sypher keeping moving, preventing Paulson from controlling successfully.

Paulson throws a strike but Sypher rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Sypher in particular looking to stall.

Paulson manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Sypher manages to get himself to full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Paulson sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Sypher's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Sypher fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Paulson, pushing him back against the cage.

Sypher had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Paulson defends it easily.

Sypher has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Paulson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Sypher bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Paulson's guard.

Paulson seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Sypher seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Paulson wriggles free and stands up.

Sypher leaves Paulson with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Sypher tries to close the distance and clinch but Paulson swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Sypher shoots in looking for a takedown but Paulson manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Sypher's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Paulson closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Sypher did well to prevent Paulson getting side control.

Paulson manages to break the clinch.
Paulson fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Sypher is looking to clinch but Paulson is avoiding it.
Paulson throws a chopping leg kick but Sypher manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
No joy there for Paulson, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Sypher moves into range and clinches up with Paulson.
Sypher has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Paulson avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Paulson has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Sypher is proving hard to escape from.

Sypher has his hands on Paulson's head, controlling the position.

Robert Paulson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Daniel Sypher.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Sypher, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Daniel Sypher tried to hype himself up post fight but didn't word it too well and it ended up with him sounding like a bit of a tool.
