PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Eron Winters (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Winters comes to the cage accompanied by "Shadows" by Mike Reagan. Jon Jones struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 266.7lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Jon Jones is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Eron Winters!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jon Jones!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Tiny Johnson and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Winters blocks the body kick.
Eron Winters seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Winters misses with an attempted mid kick.
Winters shoots in looking for a takedown but Jones manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Winters's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Jones is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Jones misses with a body shot.
Winters fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Winters throws a head kick but Jones moves out of range.
Winters could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Winters keeps the fight on the outside.

Jones feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Jones is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Winters might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Jones passes Winters's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Jones content to control rather than advance.
Jones's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

It looks like Jones might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Winters moves into full guard.
Jones trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Winters knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Jones on the ground.

Jon Jones has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Jones drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Jones is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Winters is looking to stand back up but Jones counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Winters.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Jones connects with a nice short shot to Winters's temple.
Jones content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Jones seems to be working for a kimura but Winters defends the submission attempt.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Jones is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Winters has managed to free his arm - good work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Winters wants to get back to full guard.
Winters is trying to stand up here but Jones is controlling him well.
Jones trying to control from half guard but Winters is working away.
Winters is trying to stand up here but Jones is controlling him well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Winters is not content to let Jones control the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Jon Jones.
Jones lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Winters circles away quickly and effectively.
Jones loads up on a big right hand but Winters slips the punch.
Winters tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Jones manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Jones displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Winters.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Eron Winters. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Jones swats away the attempt to clinch by Winters.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Jones avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Jones shoots in and gets a takedown into Winters's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Jones dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Winters throws a sloppy head kick and Jones moves out of range easily.
Winters displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Jones.
Winters wants to slow Jones down by chopping away at his legs.
Jones fails to land the takedown.
Winters fails with an attempt to clinch.
A head kick misses from Winters.
Winters swats away the attempt to clinch by Jones.
Winters is looking to slow Jones down with leg kicks.
Jones is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Winters throws a push kick but Jones slaps the foot to one side.
Winters tries to clinch there but Jones circles away.

Winters has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Jones finds it's way round the side to connect with Winters's head.
Jones takes a kick to the side of the head.
Jones checks a leg kick.

Winters shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Jones is trying to maintain the position but Winters is very close to passing his half guard.

Jones is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Winters pulls his head out easily.
Winters is pressing down on Jones's thigh, looking to free his foot. Jones is holding on for now.
Winters is trying to control. Jones wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Jones won't allow Winters to pass to mount.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Jones has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Winters is working away from the top position though.
Jones is pressing down on Winters's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Jones pulls Winters in to control the position.
Winters is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Winters trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Jones tries to clinch up.

Winters rushes Jones and presses him up against the cage.
Winters is trying to stall.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Winters tries to break the clinch but Jones is controlling the position.
Jones tries a knee to the head but Winters blocks it.
Jones lands a hook to the side of the head.
Jones gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Winters.

Jones successfully pulls guard.
Jones is pulling down on Winters's head. It's preventing any offense from Winters, at least for the moment.
Winters won't allow Jones to sweep him here.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Winters trying to control but Jones is working from the bottom.
Winters pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Jones is keeping the position for now.
Jones looking to control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Jones tries to clinch but Winters moves out of range.
Winters comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Jones fails with the takedown.
Eron Winters has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jon Jones.
Jones blocks a head kick by Winters.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Eron Winters will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Winters wants to clinch but Jones slips to the side

and Jones counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Jones wants to free his trapped foot but Winters is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Winters is concentrating on defense, preventing Jones from advancing position.
Jones passes to full mount!
Jones lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Jones is standing up, even though he is in mount.
Winters tries to close the distance and clinch but Jones swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Winters tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Jones paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Winters rushes Jones and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Winters prevents the takedown attempt.
Jones has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Winters is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Jones takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Jones can't break the clinch.

Winters's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Winters looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Winters throws a head kick that Jones semi-blocks.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Jones is defended easily by Winters.
Eron Winters has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jon Jones.
Winters throws a nice inside leg kick.

Winters throws a head kick that misses.
Winters avoids a punch combination nicely.
Winters misses with a wild body shot.
Winters wants to clinch.
Winters throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.

Jones fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Winters, pushing him back against the cage.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Jones manages to break the clinch.
Winters throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Jones drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Winters manages to get back to half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Winters blocking the ground and pound attempt from Jones.
Jones is trying to control the action in half guard but Winters is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Jones wants to stand up but Winters is controlling the position.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Jones is keen to just control but Winters is a slippery customer.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Jon Jones.
Jones shoots in but no luck this time.
Winters cracks the inside of Jones's front leg.

Winters throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Jones tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Winters is in Jones's guard.

Jones working for a triangle but Winters defends it easily.
Winters passes Jones's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Jones wants to control but Winters is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Winters is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Jones doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Winters.
Jones is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Winters's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Winters's back!

And that's the end of the fight!
Jon Jones comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Jones has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
