PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Eiji Kawashima (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jay Hunter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Eiji Kawashima!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jay Hunter!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Daniel Franklin and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hunter shoots in looking for a takedown but Kawashima manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Hunter's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Hunter shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Kawashima pinned against the cage. Kawashima gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Hunter dives in and grabs Kawashima's left leg, looking for a takedown. Kawashima pushes down on Hunter's head and hops out.
Eiji Kawashima has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jay Hunter.
Hunter misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Kawashima counters with a low kick, right behind Hunter 's knee.

Hunter shoots in and gets a takedown into Kawashima's guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Hunter trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Kawashima is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Hunter postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Kawashima manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Hunter manages to get himself to full guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Hunter looking for a guillotine here but Kawashima defends easily.

Hunter escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kawashima gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Hunter not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Hunter has his foot on Kawashima's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Kawashima works his way back into a safe position though.

Hunter had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Kawashima defends it easily.
Hunter is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Hunter is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Kawashima is aware though and is defending well.
Hunter wants to sweep but no luck.
Kawashima wants to pass the guard but Hunter is keeping the position.
Hunter wants to sweep here but Kawashima controlling him for the moment.
Hunter bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Kawashima's guard.
Kawashima pulls Hunter in close to his closed guard and prevents Hunter from doing any damage or advancing position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Hunter throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Kawashima works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Hunter forces his way into half guard.
Kawashima avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Hunter.
Hunter wants to free his trapped foot but Kawashima is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Hunter looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Kawashima is not content to let Hunter control the position.
Hunter throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hunter working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Kawashima's thigh. Kawashima counters though and makes it back to full guard.
Kawashima looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hunter is one step ahead there.
Hunter postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Hunter stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kawashima swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Hunter with a flurry of punches that miss.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hunter is defended easily by Kawashima.
Hunter jabs Kawashima right on the nose. Kawashima blinks but takes it well.
Sloppy strikes from Hunter. Those never looked like landing.
Nice takedown defense from Kawashima. No joy for Hunter on that attempt.
Hunter throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Kawashima's waist but Kawashima gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Hunter off to one side.
Eiji Kawashima has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jay Hunter.
Kawashima looks to score with a jab to the body but Hunter is just out of range.
Jay Hunter seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Nice takedown defense from Kawashima. No joy for Hunter on that attempt.
Kawashima ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Hunter shoots for a double leg takedown but Kawashima sprawls well. He's pushed Hunter's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Kawashima tries a low kick but Hunter avoids it.
Hunter is breathing heavily.
Kawashima throws a series of punches but Hunter moves out of range.
Hunter throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Hunter throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Kawashima.
Kawashima tries to close the distance and clinch but Hunter swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Kawashima misses with a body shot.
Kawashima throws the kick towards the body but Hunter avoids it.
Hunter uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Kawashima.
Kawashima uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Hunter.
Eiji Kawashima is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Kawashima.
Kawashima tries to clinch up.
Kawashima throws a low kick but it's checked well by Hunter.
Hunter misses with a left hand
and Kawashima counters with a nice body shot.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Kawashima.
Kawashima uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Hunter.

Kawashima ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Hunter moves away.

Hunter shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Kawashima as he avoids it easily.

Kawashima is looking to wear down Hunter with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.

Hunter jumps guard but Kawashima stands there with Hunter around his waist. Hunter gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Kawashima lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Hunter backwards.

Kawashima tries to work over Hunter's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Kawashima pushes Hunter back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.

Kawashima creates a bit of space for himself and rocks Hunter with a big uppercut! Hunter tries to clinch up but Kawashima pushes him back against the cage and lands another monster strike that crumples Hunter to the mat! Hunter covers up and Kawashima unloads with more strikes until the referee steps in to end the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:40 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Eiji Kawashima!
