PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Alex Hopkins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gabriel Fenili (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Hopkins might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Coming home -Dirty money. Gabriel Fenili has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Alex Hopkins's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Alex Hopkins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 9 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Gabriel Fenili!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Dmitry Maklakov and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hopkins decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Hopkins prevents Fenili from improving his position.
Fenili gets back to full guard.
Hopkins stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Fenili swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Hopkins is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Fenili keeping full guard, as Hopkins tries to pass.
Hopkins will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Fenili working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hopkins doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Hopkins manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Fenili is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Hopkins is aware though and is defending well.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Fenili is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Hopkins is looking to improve his position.

Fenili is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hopkins is just riding it out for now. Fenili eventually gives up the hold.
Fenili works his way into side control.

Fenili is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Hopkins is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Hopkins tries to buck Fenili off but Fenili is having none of it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Fenili thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Hopkins is looking for a sweep.
Hopkins sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Fenili looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Hopkins is trying to get back to full guard.
Hopkins is pressing down on Fenili's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Fenili trying to control but Hopkins is working from the bottom.
Fenili works a leg free and moves into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Fenili seems to be looking for submissions.
Hopkins tries to roll over but Fenili keeps him under control.
Hopkins makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Hopkins.
Hopkins keeping moving, preventing Fenili from controlling successfully.

Hopkins is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Fenili won't allow Hopkins to sweep him here.
Fenili is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Fenili trying to control the position from guard on top but Hopkins is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Fenili is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Gabriel Fenili has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Fenili moves into the clinch successfully.

Fenili pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
No luck for Hopkins with that takedown attempt.
Fenili displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Hopkins.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Fenili fails with a takedown attempt.
Hopkins lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gabriel Fenili dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Hopkins looks to land a right hand but Fenili moved out of range.
A good leg kick by Hopkins.
Fenili avoids a kick to the body.
Alex Hopkins seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A decent looking cross lands there for Hopkins.

Fenili looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Hopkins!
Hopkins is wriggling around trying to escape.
Fenili content just to control the position here.
Fenili manages to capitalize on a mistake by Hopkins to take his back!
Hopkins breaks Fenili's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

Hopkins is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Fenili looks calm but he's in trouble here. Hopkins gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Fenili is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Hopkins lets go of the hold and Fenili can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:32 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Alex Hopkins!
Alex Hopkins very nearly forgot to thank Hopkins Athletics amongst all the excitement of his win but just as the interview came to a close, he screamed their name. Hopefully he'll get a few nice freebies in the mail as a thank you.
