PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Hank Link (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hughes has chosen Country Boy Can Survive as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Hank Link!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matt Hughes!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Tiny Johnson and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hughes shoots in for a takedown but Link shows good takedown defense.
Hughes fails to land the takedown.
Link stuffs the takedown attempt from Hughes. Hughes gets slowly back to his feet.
Hank Link has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Matt Hughes.
Link wants to clinch.
Link misses with a wild body shot.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Hughes closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Hughes really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Link. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Hughes is working for a submission of some sort.
Hughes is pressing down on Link's thigh, looking to free his foot. Link is holding on for now.
Link pushes Hughes off but Hughes dives into side control.
Hughes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Link keeps working.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Hughes closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Link to the mat! Link manages to get full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Link keeping full guard, as Hughes tries to pass.
Hughes wants to control from the top but Link keeps moving.
Hughes makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Hughes with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Hughes accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Hughes is working Link over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Hughes is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Hughes closes the distance and clinches up with Link, looking for a takedown. Hughes pushes Link against the cage but Link circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
The fight stays on the outside here - Link looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Hughes shoots in and bounces Link off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Link looking for a sweep. Not yet Link, not yet.
Hughes prevents Link from getting back to his feet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Link avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Hughes stands up over Link, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Hughes must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Hughes avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Hank Link is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
No luck for Hughes with that takedown attempt.

Hughes shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Hughes showed some decent athleticism there.

Hughes is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Link is not content to let Hughes control the position.

Hughes is looking for a kimura but Link is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Hughes to get the leverage.
Link is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Hughes's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Hughes's back!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Link looking for the choke but no joy.

Link is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Hughes knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Hughes for a finish.

Link is controlling the position but Hughes somehow manages to roll and ends up with half guard.
Link lands strikes from half guard.
Hughes is not content to let Link control the position.
Link passes into side control, despite Hughes's attempt to control the position.
Hughes is trying to get back to half guard.
Link lands a nice forearm strike.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Hughes is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Matt Hughes has got the better of the ground game so far.
Hughes tries to roll over but Link keeps him under control.
Link scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Link is figuring out what he wants to do next.

That was a close second round but I would say that Hank Link will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Link regains half guard, as Hughes was trying to land strikes.
Link tries to kick Hughes off but Hughes keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Hughes is just content to waste time from the top position. Link takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Hughes keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Link's head.

Hughes postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Link is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Hughes, into his guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Hughes is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Link wants to control from the top but Hughes keeps moving.

Hughes looking for a guillotine here but Link defends easily.

Matt Hughes comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Hughes has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
