PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Erick Coleman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ray Hobbs (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hobbs has chosen Hell's Bells - ACDC as his entrance music. Ray Hobbs will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Erick Coleman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ray Hobbs!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Tiny Johnson and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Coleman fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Coleman tries for a takedown but Hobbs sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Hobbs clinches up with Coleman and pushes him back against the cage.

Hobbs turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Hobbs manages to end up in side control.
Coleman wants to control but Hobbs postures up.
Hobbs tries to move to mount but Coleman blocks the move with his legs.
Coleman is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Coleman is trying to control Hobbs's posture but Hobbs avoids it.
Coleman stops Hobbs from passing to mount.
Hobbs trying to control the action but Coleman is working from the bottom.

Hobbs decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Coleman shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Coleman showed some decent athleticism there.
Hobbs is trying to stand.
Hobbs is looking to improve his position.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Hobbs can do anything to dispel that myth.
Hobbs throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Hobbs wants to get back to his feet.
Hobbs gets back to full guard.
Hobbs throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Hobbs is looking to stand back up but Coleman counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Hobbs.
Hobbs is trying to buck Coleman off.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Coleman thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Hobbs can't do much from the bottom here.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Hobbs is trying to get back to half guard.
Hobbs stops Coleman from passing to mount.
Hobbs manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Hobbs seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Coleman is looking for a sweep. Hobbs is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Hobbs is keen to just control but Coleman is a slippery customer.

Hobbs looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Coleman moves into full guard.
Coleman wants to sweep but no luck.
Coleman looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Hobbs puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Hobbs misses with the combination.
Coleman throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Hobbs's waist but Hobbs gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Coleman off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Erick Coleman. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Coleman won't allow Hobbs to get back to his feet.
Coleman tries to free his leg and advance position but Hobbs is retaining full guard.

Hobbs pushes Coleman off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Coleman shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Hobbs tries to clinch but Coleman moves out of range.

Coleman fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Hobbs sprawls well initially but Coleman persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Hobbs is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Ray Hobbs will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Hobbs throws a combination. Coleman tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Coleman misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Coleman fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Coleman drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Hobbs trying to remain calm as Coleman controls from the top position.

Hobbs is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Coleman off and has taken his back!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hobbs is trying to stick to Coleman's back but Coleman is turning into Hobbs. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Hobbs's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Coleman.

Coleman keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Hobbs's head.
Coleman slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Coleman lands a couple of good shots to his opponent's body and a final shot to the head. Good little attack there by Coleman.
Coleman is trying to stick to Hobbs's back but Hobbs is turning into Coleman. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Coleman's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Hobbs.
Hobbs in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Coleman looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hobbs is one step ahead there.
Hobbs is working Coleman over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Hobbs must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Coleman had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Hobbs is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Coleman Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Hobbs's back instead.
Coleman is trying to stick to Hobbs's back but Hobbs is turning into Coleman. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Coleman's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Hobbs.
Coleman is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Coleman in particular looking to stall.
Coleman is nestled in close to Hobbs, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Coleman seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hobbs does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Coleman passes the guard and advances to mount!

Coleman postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Hobbs looks a forlorn figure.
Coleman wants to control the pace but Hobbs is squirming around nicely.

Coleman looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Coleman takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Hobbs is in all sorts of trouble here.
Hobbs wants to hold on but Coleman pushes him away.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Coleman closes the distance and clinches up with Hobbs, looking for a takedown. Coleman pushes Hobbs against the cage but Hobbs circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Coleman feints and as Hobbs raises his hands in defense, Coleman changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Hobbs postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Coleman to stand up.

Hobbs wants to clinch.
Ray Hobbs seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Coleman swats away the attempt to clinch by Hobbs.
Hobbs fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Hobbs jabs at Coleman's body.
Left hook, right uppercut from Hobbs.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Coleman doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Hobbs tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Hobbs tries to land a front kick but Coleman steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Coleman gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Coleman has a takedown stuffed.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Erick Coleman. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hobbs stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.


Coleman is rocked!

Hobbs doesn't manage to clinch there - Coleman circles away.
Coleman tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Hobbs swivels and escapes.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Coleman looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Hobbs wants to get back to his feet.

Coleman working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Hobbs tries to kick Coleman off in order to stand up. Coleman Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.

Coleman prevents Hobbs from escaping the position.
Hobbs is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Coleman has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Coleman tries to control but Hobbs wriggling away.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hobbs regains half guard.
Coleman wants to take a breather but Hobbs is having none of it.
Coleman lands strikes from half guard.
Coleman moves into full mount! Hobbs won't be happy about that!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Hobbs tries to reverse the position but Coleman maintains control.

Ray Hobbs comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Hobbs has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
