Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Pavel Rurikov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Frenk Schmellengartner!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Paul Aken and Wagner Zegers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Schmellengartner fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Rurikov has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Rurikov.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Rurikov thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Schmellengartner tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Rurikov wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Schmellengartner is trying to control Rurikov's posture but Rurikov avoids it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Rurikov wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Schmellengartner, who protects the arm well.

Rurikov goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Schmellengartner has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Rurikov but great work by Schmellengartner.

Schmellengartner tries to pass to full mount but Rurikov defends it.

It looks like Pavel Rurikov has been cut.
Rurikov fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Schmellengartner avoids it really well and circles away.
Frenk Schmellengartner seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Schmellengartner pushes Rurikov up against the cage in a clinch.
Rurikov tries to pull guard but Schmellengartner forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Rurikov drops down looking for an ankle pick but Schmellengartner pulls his leg out and moves away.

Schmellengartner scores with a kick to the midsection.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Rurikov manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Schmellengartner on his heels. He'll look to pass Schmellengartner's guard now, I'm sure.
Rurikov stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Schmellengartner swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rurikov tries to free his leg and advance position but Schmellengartner is retaining full guard.
Rurikov slips nicely into half guard.
Rurikov passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Schmellengartner!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Schmellengartner is squirming around, avoiding Rurikov's attempts to control the action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Pavel Rurikov will probably get the nod.

No luck with that takedown attempt from Rurikov.
Schmellengartner throws the kick towards the body but Rurikov avoids it.
Rurikov fails with a takedown attempt.
Schmellengartner moves into range and connects with a jab.
Rurikov connects with the punch.
Frenk Schmellengartner is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Rurikov shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Schmellengartner is trying to defend but Rurikov finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Rurikov uses his free foot to push down on Schmellengartner's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Schmellengartner.

Rurikov moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Schmellengartner has worked his arm free - good work by Schmellengartner!
You can see the frustration on Schmellengartner's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Rurikov creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Schmellengartner sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Rurikov is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Schmellengartner has escaped the position, nice work there.

Rurikov wants to take a breather but Schmellengartner manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Rurikov.

Schmellengartner tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Schmellengartner not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Rurikov is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Schmellengartner is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Schmellengartner has escaped and now he's on top!

Schmellengartner must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Schmellengartner wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Rurikov's closed guard. He's half up but Rurikov has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Rurikov pivots and extends the arm, Schmellengartner falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Rurikov! Well done that man!

Pavel Rurikov was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
