PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Vincent Volkov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lawrence Cohen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Volkov comes to the cage accompanied by The Trooper by Iron Maiden. The crowd seem to be enjoying Cohen's choice of entrance music: Season in the Abyss. Lawrence Cohen told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 15 - 0, fighting out of London, Vincent Volkov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 23 - 2, fighting out of New York, Lawrence Cohen!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Russell Pearce and Anthony Taglia.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cohen lands a right hook to the body.
Volkov will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Cohen moves away from the strike by Volkov.
Volkov takes one on the button.
Volkov throws a hook but Cohen blocks it.
Cohen scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Cohen stuffs the takedown attempt from Volkov. Volkov gets slowly back to his feet.
Volkov tries to work over Cohen's front leg with a kick but Cohen checks it.
Volkov misses with a double jab.

Cohen changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Volkov looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Cohen tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Cohen has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Volkov is trying to improve his position.

Cohen is looking to take a break and control but Volkov is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Cohen working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Cohen is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Volkov has escaped the position, nice work there.

Cohen swings around for an armbar but Volkov sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Cohen's guard.

Cohen avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Volkov trying to control but Cohen is working from the bottom.
Cohen utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Cohen trying to keep a closed guard but Volkov is proving a slippery customer.
Volkov with a flurry of punches that miss.
Volkov wants to pass the guard but Cohen is keeping the position.
Cohen keeping moving, preventing Volkov from controlling successfully.
Volkov is working Cohen over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Volkov is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Volkov engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Cohen is trying to control the position but Volkov postures up.
Volkov postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Volkov looking to pass the guard.
Volkov controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Lawrence Cohen.
Cohen tries a head kick but it misses.
Volkov avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Volkov misses with a takedown attempt - Cohen sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
A lazy left from Cohen finds it's target.

Cohen tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Volkov was well out of range. Poor timing from Cohen.
Volkov uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Cohen.
Cohen takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Volkov misses with a lunging right hand
and Cohen counters with a right hand to the body.
Volkov tries a head kick but it misses.
A looping hook to the body misses from Volkov. Cohen does a little dance to reset his feet.
Volkov misses with a low kick.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Volkov jabs Cohen to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Cohen takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
A big right from Volkov misses.
Vincent Volkov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Volkov ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Cohen moves away.
Volkov loads up on a big right hand but Cohen slips the punch.
Volkov moves into range and connects with a jab.
Cohen closes the distance and clinches up with Volkov, looking for a takedown. Cohen pushes Volkov against the cage but Volkov circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Cohen just misses with a punch to the body.
Cohen uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Volkov.
Volkov scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Volkov is looking to score with low kicks.
Cohen jabbing away but nothing is landing.

Volkov closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Volkov lands in his opponent's guard.
Cohen keeping full guard, as Volkov tries to pass.
Cohen wants to sweep here but Volkov controlling him for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Volkov throws a big right hand that misses.

Volkov distracts Cohen with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Volkov stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Volkov swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Volkov lunges at Cohen with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Cohen's hand.
Cohen takes one to the chin there.
Volkov throws a hook but Cohen avoids it easily.
Volkov takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Volkov blocks a jab.
A good leg kick by Volkov.

Volkov defending well as Cohen loads up on a big left hand.
Volkov throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Volkov sizes up Cohen with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.

Volkov connects with a jab.

Volkov sends Cohen crashing to the mat with a devastating uppercut! Volkov is motioning to the referee to let Cohen up. He wants to try and finish this one on the feet!

Cohen is rocked!
Vincent Volkov is winning the standup battle so far.
Cohen drops his hands momentarily. Volkov doesn't need a second invitation, landing a shot to the temple. Cohen staggers and falls to the mat and the ref dives in to save him from any more punishment. Cohen doesn't seem happy with the stoppage but he was done.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:15 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Vincent Volkov!
After winning the bout, Vincent Volkov thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
