The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hughes defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Hertz.
Hertz shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Hughes but Hughes pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Hughes clinches up with Hertz and pushes him back against the cage.

Hughes pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Nice takedown defense from Hughes. No joy for Hertz on that attempt.

Hertz shoots in for a takedown but Hughes shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Hertz gets tackled into the cage by Hughes. Hughes maintains the clinch.
Hughes gets underhooks to prevent Hertz's takedown attempt.
Hertz drops down looking for an ankle pick but Hughes pulls his leg out and moves away.
Hertz shoots in looking for a takedown. Hughes tries to sprawl out of it but Hertz keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Hughes manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Hughes connects with a single shot there.

Hughes closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Dick Hertz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Hughes lands with a nice body punch.

Hertz shoots in for a double leg but Hughes sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Hughes displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Hertz.

Hughes gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Hertz has Hughes pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Hughes manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Hughes paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Hughes moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.

Hertz moves forwards but Hughes connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Hughes lands a leg kick that knocks Hertz off balance momentarily.
Hughes should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Hughes pushes Hertz up against the cage in a clinch.

Hughes escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Hertz is rocked!
Hertz throws a wild hook but Hughes just manages to duck under it and - ooooh! Hertz gets nailed by a brutal uppercut which crumples him back against the cage! The referee jumps in - Hughes raises his hands in celebration and walks away!
