PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Matte B (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Poly Styrene (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think B might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Markoolio anthem. Styrene has chosen Men at work - Land down under (Gotcha feat. Mission remix 2009) as his entrance music. Poly Styrene has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Matte B!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Poly Styrene!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Winston Howard and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

B gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Styrene has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. B is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Styrene can't get the takedown.
Styrene goes for a takedown in the clinch but B prevents it.
Matte B has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Poly Styrene.
A right hand to the body from B.
Styrene goes for a takedown attempt but B pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Styrene circles away from the clinch attempt.

B scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
B working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
B is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.


Styrene is rocked!
B controlling the action here.

B is keen to just control but Styrene is a slippery customer.
B is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
B is trying to control the action in half guard but Styrene is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
B is looking to advance position but Styrene won't allow it.
B content to control rather than advance.
Styrene taking some punishment here, with B in his half guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
B working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
B wants to pass the guard but Styrene is defending well.
Styrene is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
B not doing much here.
B's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Styrene is staying active underneath B, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with B in particular looking to stall.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Matte B just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Styrene wants to clinch

and B counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Styrene's guard now.
B is breathing heavily.
B wants to control from the top but Styrene keeps moving.
B has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Styrene is looking to stand up but B isn't so interested in that idea.
B thows a big elbow that misses.
Styrene keeping full guard, as B tries to pass.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
B distracts Styrene with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

B trying to control the position from guard on top but Styrene is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Styrene not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
B wants to clinch
and Styrene counters with a nice body kick.
B clinches but Styrene breaks the clinch
and Styrene makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Styrene tries to clinch there but B circles away.
B darts in trying to clinch
and Styrene counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. B is lucky that one didn't land flush.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matte B dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


B tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Styrene counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Styrene is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
B has Styrene pressed against the cage.
Styrene is trying to work for a single leg takedown but B pulls him back up using the underhooks.
B drops down looking for an ankle pick but Styrene pulls his leg out and moves away.
B is looking to clinch.
B moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A cross from Styrene lands.

B closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
B is looking to advance position but Styrene won't allow it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

B stops Styrene from getting back to his feet.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
B is looking to stall here but Styrene recovers full guard.
B trying to control the position from guard on top but Styrene is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Styrene is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Styrene not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Styrene keeping moving, preventing B from controlling successfully.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Styrene tries for a takedown but B sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Styrene keeps the fight on the outside.
B tries to clinch up

and Styrene holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

B is trying to trip Styrene. He has hold of a leg but Styrene is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. B persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
B postures up and lands a big shot to Styrene's brow.
Styrene wants to stand up but B is controlling him.
B trying to control the position from guard on top but Styrene is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Styrene manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. B manages to get himself to full guard.

Styrene stands up from B's guard - Styrene perhaps looking for a knockout.
Styrene is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Matte B seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
B throws a head kick that misses
and Styrene counters with a solid body kick.
B darts in trying to clinch
and Styrene counters with a head kick. That will keep B thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
B has his takedown stuffed

and Styrene counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Styrene can't break the clinch.
Styrene tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Styrene tries to pull guard but B holds him up against the cage and eventually Styrene drops back down to his feet.
Matte B has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Poly Styrene.

B wants the takedown. Styrene is fighting it off but B persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Styrene's guard against the cage.
B looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
B passes Styrene's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
B is taking a breather. Styrene says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
B works his way into full mount!
B landing strikes from the mount and Styrene is in trouble!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matte B dominated that second round.
That's time! B's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


B throws a lazy body kick
and Styrene counters with a head kick.

B shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
B trying to control the action but Styrene is working from the bottom.
B prevents Styrene from improving his position.
Matte B overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
B lands strikes from half guard.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. B lands a nice short elbow.
Styrene takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Well, if B is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
B scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

B content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
B lands with a punch from half guard.

B is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Styrene wants to get back to his feet.
B wants to lay and pray for a moment but Styrene keeps working.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. B connects with a nice short shot to Styrene's temple.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
B looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
B takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
B winds up and cracks Styrene with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
B passes to side control.
Styrene tries to strike but it doesn't land.
Styrene manages to get back to half guard.
Styrene tries to get to full guard but B has control of the leg.
B perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Styrene works his way to full guard. Good work.
Styrene bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in B's guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Styrene drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Styrene jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Styrene trying to control but B is working from the bottom.
B is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
B on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if B tries to get out of the position.
B is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Styrene moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
B looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
B might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells B's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

B working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Styrene's head.
B is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
B forces his way into half guard.
B is controlling the pace.
B trying to control the action but Styrene is working from the bottom.
B performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Poly Styrene has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

And that's the end of the fight!
Matte B showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for B, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
