PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Raul Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Tharis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Tharis's choice of entrance music: Burning down the house. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Raul Hughes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jon Tharis!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Sosuke Kotani.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hughes digs a good hook to Tharis's body.
Jon Tharis seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Tharis throws a head kick that misses.
Hughes looks to land a left hand but Tharis moved out of range nicely.
Tharis misses with a body kick.
Hughes will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Hughes throws a jab when Tharis was well out of range.
Tharis will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Tharis shoots in looking for a takedown. Hughes tries to sprawl out of it but Tharis keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Hughes manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Tharis lands a really nice looking cross but Hughes seems unphased.

Tharis tries to land a front kick but Hughes steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Tharis closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Hughes's guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Tharis working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Tharis stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hughes swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Tharis takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Tharis wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Hughes, who protects the arm well.

Hughes regains half guard there - taking advantage of Tharis's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.

Hughes avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Tharis.
Hughes is staying active underneath Tharis, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Hughes keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Tharis tries to pass the half guard into mount. Hughes knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Tharis throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Tharis throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Tharis is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Hughes wants to improve his position but Tharis is controlling well.

Tharis is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hughes is just riding it out for now. Tharis eventually gives up the hold.

Jon Tharis comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Hughes has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
