The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smith is working on a single leg takedown against the ropes. Yamada can't fight it off and eventually Smith manages to take the fight to the floor. Yamada looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Smith connects with a nice short shot to Yamada's temple.

Yamada wants to get back to his feet but Smith is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Yamada has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Smith can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Smith shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Yamada's guard.

Smith stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Yamada to get to his feet.
Tadamasa Yamada seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smith shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Yamada as he avoids it easily.
Yamada lands a glancing blow to the side of Smith's head.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Tadamasa Yamada has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dan Smith.
Nice body punch from Yamada - that landed with a thud.
Yamada is pressed up against the ropes. Smith has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Yamada down to the mat. Yamada avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Smith tries to score a body lock takedown but Yamada shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Smith has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Yamada is trying to keep an underhook but Smith manages to get the takedown into half guard.
