Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Matt Mert (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Vieira (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mert comes into the arena with Pregador Luo - Bate Pesadão blaring out of the sound system. Matt Mert has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matt Mert!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, David Vieira!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Leandro Rodrigues and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A nice inside leg kick there by Mert. That's going to slow Vieira down.
Mert looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!

Mert gets caught napping as Vieira dives in and scores a takedown. Mert manages to retain guard.
Vieira controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Vieira gets to his feet. Mert looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Mert is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Vieira stuffs the takedown.

Vieira feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Vieira drops back, looking for a kneebar! Mert looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Mert looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Mert!

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Mert lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Vieira down.
Mert works to advance to full mount. Vieira defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Mert's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Vieira shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Mert is trying to defend but Vieira finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Mert is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Vieira is aware though and is defending well.

Vieira gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Mert closes the distance and clinches up with Vieira, looking for a takedown. Mert pushes Vieira against the cage but Vieira circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Vieira moves into range and clinches up with Mert.
Mert tries to pull guard but Vieira holds him up against the cage and eventually Mert drops back down to his feet.
Mert manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Vieira pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Mert tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Vieira manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Vieira closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Vieira lands in his opponent's guard.
Vieira is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
David Vieira has got the better of the ground game so far.

Vieira is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

David Vieira has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Vieira closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Mert quickly recovers to half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Vieira is pressing down on Mert's thigh, looking to free his foot. Mert is holding on for now.

David Vieira showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Vieira shoots in looking for a takedown but Mert manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Vieira's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

We're going to have a standup here because Matt Mert wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Well Vieira has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
