PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Matt Rex (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bubble Bob (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rex's entrance music is Burn In My Light. A fine choice. Bob has chosen Diamonds Aren't Forever - Bring Me the Horizon as his entrance music. Bubble Bob looks lathargic as he enters the arena. Wake up son, you're about to have a fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Matt Rex!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Bubble Bob!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Bruno Hogan and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rex throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Rex clinches.

Rex ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Rex no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Rex wants to sweep but no luck.
Rex managing to control the position.
Rex controls Bob momentarily but Bob frees himself.
Rex manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Bob manages to get himself to full guard.
Rex trying to control but Bob is working from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Matt Rex wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Rex shoots in and gets a takedown into Bob's guard.
Rex is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Rex wanted to stand there but Bob had control of the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rex tries to free his leg and advance position but Bob is retaining full guard.
Bob is trying to control the position but Rex postures up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Matt Rex has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Bob fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Rex shoots in for a takedown but Bob shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Rex is trying hard to land a takedown here. Bob sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Rex is breathing heavily.
Bob buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Rex pushes Bob up against the cage in a clinch.
Bob lands a good knee to the midsection. Rex won't want to take too many of those.
Bob is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Rex to keep the fight standing.
Bob unloads a knee to the mid-section. Rex lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.

Rex manages to break the clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rex moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Rex shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Rex misses with a head shot.

Rex goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Bob turns into him and now he's in Rex's guard.
Bob with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bob passes Rex's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Bob thows a huge punch but Rex dodges it nicely.
Rex tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Bob manages to move to mount!

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
A nice elbow there by Bob.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rex tries to lock up and control but Bob gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Bob prevents Rex from getting the reversal.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Rex dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Ouch! a nice leg kick from Bob, right into the meat.
Rex fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Bob has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Matt Rex seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Rex rushes Bob and presses him up against the cage.
Rex tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Bob smiles and moves away.
Bob scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.

Rex throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Bob tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Rex is in Bob's guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Rex wants to get up but he can't break Bob's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Rex engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Rex has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Matt Rex.
Rex tries to score a power double leg takedown but Bob sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Rex somewhat.

Rex closes the distance and clinches.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Bob has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Rex uses from the top position.
Rex throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Bob works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Bob is trying to control the position but Rex postures up.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Rex changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Bob looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Matt Rex overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Check out the look on Rex's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Rex throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Bob works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
Rex looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Rex is looking to take a break and control but Bob is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rex missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Bob is looking to control Rex's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Bob avoid being mounted?
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Bob is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Rex's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Rex's back!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Bob gets his hands free as Rex looks to control.
Bob misses with punches from the back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Rex dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Rex shoots for a takedown but Bob saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Bob explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.

Rex has taken the fight to the clinch.

Rex manages to break the clinch.
Rex throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Bob's waist but Bob gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Rex off to one side.
Bob displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Rex.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Matt Rex. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Rex shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Bob clobbers Rex with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rex shoots in and drives through. Bob sprawls well.
Rex takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.

Sloppy strikes from Bob. Those never looked like landing.
Rex misses with a combination
and Bob counters with a low kick, right behind Rex 's knee.
Bob shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Rex but Rex pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Bob ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Bob lands a nice leg kick that just misses Rex's sensitive parts.
Rex shoots in for a takedown but Bob shows good takedown defense.

Bob shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Bob wants to stand but Rex has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Bob drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Rex dives on top into guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rex looking to sit in guard and control but Bob gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Bob stands up from Rex's guard - Bob perhaps looking for a knockout.

and Rex counters with a nice double leg into side control. Bob won't be happy with that.
Rex moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Rex is trying to get an arm triangle but Bob is defending well.
Rex trying to control the action but Bob is working from the bottom.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Bubble Bob.
I think Rex has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
