PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gilbert Melendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shane Chojacki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shane Chojacki told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Gilbert Melendez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 1, fighting out of New York, Shane Chojacki!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Blasius, Wagner Zegers and Radbod Blank.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Melendez shoots in and drives through. Chojacki sprawls well.

Chojacki tries to sprawl but Melendez drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Melendez is working for a kimura but Chojacki is defending it quite comfortably.
Chojacki tries to get to full guard but Melendez has control of the leg.

Melendez thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Chojacki's head.

Chojacki is doing well to control the position and prevent Melendez from advancing to side control.

Melendez seems to be trying to get a kimura but instead Chojacki has recovered full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Melendez postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Chojacki is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Melendez, into his guard.

Chojacki is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Melendez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Chojacki is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Shane Chojacki seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Chojacki shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Chojacki was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Gilbert Melendez overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

That was a close second round but I would say that Gilbert Melendez will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Melendez lands a jab to Chojacki's midsection.

Chojacki feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

After the fight, Gilbert Melendez was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
