PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tomasz Kowalik (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Thiago Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alves has a pretty significant injury - he really shouldn't be fighting right now but he's a warrior and he's here none the less! Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Tomasz Kowalik!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Thiago Alves!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Yukihiro Shimada.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kowalik misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Alves looks gassed!
Alves throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Alves shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Kowalik as he jumps to the side.
Kowalik closes this distance looking for a takedown but Alves circles away.

Kowalik closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Alves to the mat! Alves manages to get full guard.
Kowalik trying to control but Alves is working from the bottom.

Kowalik gets to his feet - Alves follows without any prompting.

Kowalik closes the distance and clinches.
Kowalik lands a nice elbow.
Alves is trying to break the clinch but Kowalik is controlling him.

Kowalik breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Tomasz Kowalik seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Kowalik swats away the attempt to clinch by Alves.
A slapping leg kick lands for Kowalik.
Kowalik swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Alves uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Kowalik.
Alves tries to clinch but Kowalik is having none of it.
Alves shoots and misses
and Kowalik counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Alves is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Alves misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Tomasz Kowalik has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Thiago Alves.
Alves shoots in but Kowalik avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Kowalik keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Kowalik thuds his right hand into Alves's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

Kowalik fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Alves shoots in and drives through. Kowalik sprawls well.
Kowalik throws a series of punches but Alves moves out of range.
Alves shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Kowalik misses with a body shot.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Alves crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Kowalik - the referee stops the clock and Alves gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Kowalik. Alves manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
Kowalik tries a head kick but it misses.

Alves gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Kowalik to score an easy takedown into full guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Alves looking to control.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Alves is on top in guard.
Alves wants to control from the top but Kowalik keeps moving.
Alves might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Kowalik kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Kowalik wants to sweep here but Alves controlling him for the moment.

Alves has gone for a leg lock! Kowalik slips out almost immediately though and dives into Alves's guard.

Alves manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Kowalik manages to get himself to full guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Alves trying to control but Kowalik is working from the bottom.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kowalik is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Alves tries to close the distance and clinch but Kowalik swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Alves takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Kowalik tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Kowalik throws a head kick but Alves moves out of range.
Kowalik throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Alves.
Alves takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.

Kowalik has managed to clinch.
Alves fails to pull guard.
Alves gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Kowalik.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kowalik escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Kowalik feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Alves's calf.
Kowalik pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Alves fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Kowalik throws a head kick but Alves moves out of range.
Nice takedown defense from Kowalik. No joy for Alves on that attempt.

Alves shoots in looking for a takedown but Kowalik manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Alves's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Alves checks a leg kick.

Alves shoots for a takedown but Kowalik saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

and Kowalik counters with a nice leg kick.
Kowalik takes a swing at Alves's ribcage but misses.
Kowalik throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Alves displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Kowalik.

Kowalik tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Alves ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Alves bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Alves scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Alves takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fight stays on the outside here - Alves looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Alves is taking a breather. Kowalik says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Tomasz Kowalik is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Kowalik wants to hold on but Alves pushes him away.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Alves putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
Thiago Alves has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Alves lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

And that's the end of the fight!
Thiago Alves comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Kowalik has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
