PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tom Rivet (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Thomas Brittany (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rivet comes into the arena with Hol' Up blaring out of the sound system. Brittany has chosen sandstorm as his entrance music. Thomas Brittany is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Tom Rivet!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Thomas Brittany!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Eliza Hachem and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rivet throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Brittany throws a head kick that misses.

Rivet drives through with a takedown into Brittany's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Rivet will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Brittany can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Rivet controls the pace.
Rivet trying to control but Brittany is working from the bottom.
Rivet stays in close to Brittany's body and controls the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Tom Rivet.

Brittany gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Rivet to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Rivet looking to sit in guard and control but Brittany gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Brittany trying to control the position from guard on top but Rivet is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Rivet manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Brittany manages to get himself to full guard.

Brittany is looking to sweep but instead, Rivet has passed into half guard.
Rivet is pressing down on Brittany's thigh, looking to free his foot. Brittany is holding on for now.

Rivet is working hard here to advance position.
Brittany wants to get back to full guard.
Brittany trying to get back to full guard but Rivet takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount!
Rivet looking to control and managing it successfully.
Rivet has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Rivet takes his opponent's back. Perhaps a chance to lock up a rear naked choke here.

Rivet punches the canvas rather than the man.

Brittany trying to control the hands but Rivet breaks the grip.

Brittany is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.

Rivet patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?
Rivet controlling the position well here. Brittany rolled but Rivet kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.
Brittany turns into Rivet and is now in his guard.
Rivet looking to hit a scissor sweep but Brittany is one step ahead there.
Rivet on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Rivet tries to get out of the position.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rivet manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Rivet changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Brittany looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Rivet looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Rivet lands an elbow.
Brittany prevents Rivet from moving into mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rivet throwing strikes but missing, from side control.

Rivet tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Rivet has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Tom Rivet overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Rivet wants to control but Brittany is keeping him busy.

Rivet is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Brittany is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Brittany sneaks back into half guard.
Rivet wants to lay and pray for a moment but Brittany keeps working.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Tom Rivet just wasn't active enough.
Rivet swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Rivet fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Brittany lands a front kick.
Rivet circles away from the clinch attempt.
Brittany is looking to slow Rivet down with leg kicks.
Rivet throws a right hand that Brittany ducks under and follows up with a left that Brittany also avoids with ease.
Nice sprawl there from Rivet as Brittany shoots in.
Brittany is trying hard to land a takedown here. Rivet sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Rivet misses with a series of wild punches.
Brittany changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Rivet tries to avoid it but Brittany manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Rivet to the ground. Rivet escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Tom Rivet has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Thomas Brittany.
Brittany is breathing heavily.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Rivet falls off balance throwing a combination
and Brittany counters with a big head kick but Rivet shrugs it off.

Brittany shoots for a double leg takedown but Rivet sprawls well. He's pushed Brittany's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Tom Rivet is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Brittany gets a takedown into half guard.
Rivet trying to control but Brittany postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rivet tries to kick Brittany off but Brittany keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Rivet is looking for a sweep. Brittany is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Tom Rivet has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Brittany with a poor takedown

and Rivet counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Rivet throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Rivet seems to be working for a kimura but Brittany defends the submission attempt.
Rivet tries to pass the half guard into mount. Brittany knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Rivet thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Brittany's head.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Rivet is trying to work for a kimura but Brittany is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Rivet looks to score with a jab to the body but Brittany is just out of range.
Rivet throws a right and a left that both miss.
Brittany scores with a kick to the midsection.
Rivet takes a kick to the body and keeps moving.
Rivet looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Rivet shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Rivet trying to control the action but Brittany is working from the bottom.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Rivet looking to sit in guard and control but Brittany gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Brittany postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Brittany slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Rivet working for submissions but it's allowed Brittany to get to half guard.
Rivet is pressing down on Brittany's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Rivet looking for a sweep. Not yet Rivet, not yet.

Rivet throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Rivet is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Brittany dives into side control.
Rivet tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Brittany wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Tom Rivet is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Brittany throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Rivet manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rivet tries to roll over but Brittany keeps him under control.
Brittany not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Rivet wants to improve his position but Brittany is controlling well.
Rivet wants to get back to his feet.
Rivet wants to sweep but Brittany has passed to side control!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
You can see the frustration on Rivet's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Thomas Brittany has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Tom Rivet.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Rivet, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
