PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Wasim Kayani (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johnny Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kayani comes to the cage accompanied by E.S. Posthumus - ARISE. Smith has chosen Smoke the Fire as his entrance music. Johnny Smith is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Wasim Kayani!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Johnny Smith!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Donatello Bradman and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith slips a jab and a cross from Kayani.
Kayani listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Smith takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Kayani cracks Smith with an open hand slap.
Kayani throws a right and a left that Smith avoids nicely.
Smith throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Smith moves out of range as Kayani strikes.
Kayani swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Smith.

Smith scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Kayani struggling a bit here.
Kayani is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Kayani tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Smith tries to score with some ground and pound. Kayani controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Kayani is looking for a sweep.

Kayani struggling a bit here.

Smith working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Kayani tries to improve position but can't.

Smith tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Smith has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Smith thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Smith trying to control the action but Kayani is working from the bottom.
Kayani is looking for a sweep.
Smith trying to control the position but Kayani is working away.

Smith tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Kayani sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Kayani slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith postures up.
Smith wanted to stand there but Kayani had control of the position.
Kayani keeping full guard, as Smith tries to pass.
Smith wants to control from the top but Kayani keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith preventing the sweep.
Kayani might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Smith gets the takedown into side control.
Kayani is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Smith off and has taken his back!
Kayani lands with a hammerfist to the side of Smith's head.
Kayani lands punches and elbows.
Kayani gets his hooks in and is throwing strikes.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Kayani connects with a big shot to the side of Smith's head.
Smith can't escape the position.
Kayani lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Smith trying to control the position but Kayani manages to sink in the hooks.
Kayani controlling from the back.
Smith wants to get back to his feet.
Kayani is working the ground and pound. Can Smith escape?
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kayani punishes Smith with strikes from the back mount.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Kayani lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Smith is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Wasim Kayani dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Kayani works the jab nicely.
Kayani works over Smith's head and body with a nice combination.
Kayani clobbers Smith with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Smith tries for a takedown but Kayani sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Smith shoots and misses
and Kayani counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.


Smith is rocked!
Kayani ducks down into range and throws a picture perfect right hook that connects with Smith's jaw. Smith's eyes stare off into space as he falls to the mat, out cold! Kayani does the decent thing and steps back, rather than landing any shots to his unconscious opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:26 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Wasim Kayani!
A very excited looking Wasim Kayani made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
