PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Steve Simpson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hideo Nomo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nomo comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Down Rodeo kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Hideo Nomo is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Nomo shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Simpson is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Simpson regains half guard.
Nomo trying to pass the guard but Simpson defending well.
Nomo is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Nomo blocks the strikes from Simpson.
Simpson gets full guard.
Simpson is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Simpson pulls Nomo in to control the position.
Nomo trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Simpson might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Simpson pushes Nomo off and gets back to his feet.
Nomo has a takedown stuffed.
Simpson throws a head kick that misses.
Simpson throws a series of punches but Nomo avoids them all with ease.

Simpson shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Nomo's guard.

Simpson won't allow Nomo to sweep him here.

Simpson has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Nomo is defending against the submission attempts here by Simpson.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Simpson is looking to take a break and control but Nomo is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Simpson works his foot free and advances to mount.
Nomo is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Nomo is squirming around, avoiding Simpson's attempts to control the action.

Simpson is working for a guillotine from mount but Nomo frees his head quite easily.

Simpson jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Nomo is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Nomo and Simpson has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Nomo is not content to let Simpson control the position.
Nomo regains half guard there - taking advantage of Simpson's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.

Nomo doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Simpson counters with a takedown into side control.
Simpson just content to control the position.

Simpson decides to stand up, so the ref orders Nomo to his feet.
Simpson throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Nomo.

so Simpson counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Simpson is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Simpson wants to stand but Nomo has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Nomo utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Nomo has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Simpson doesn't defend quickly enough and Nomo has managed to lock this one up! Can Simpson escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Nomo on a fantastic submission victory.
