PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Derek Conrad (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Shewmaker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Conrad throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.

Shewmaker changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Conrad looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Shewmaker swings around for an armbar but Conrad sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Shewmaker's guard.
Conrad wants to control from the top but Shewmaker keeps moving.
Conrad trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Shewmaker is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Conrad defends well.

Shewmaker has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Conrad is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Shewmaker.
Conrad wants to lay and pray for a moment but Shewmaker keeps working.
Shewmaker is trying to work for a sweep but Conrad has mounted him!
Conrad tries to control but Shewmaker wriggling away.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shewmaker regains half guard.
Conrad seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Shewmaker does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Shewmaker is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Conrad pulls his head out easily.

Shewmaker is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Conrad is working for a submission of some sort.
Conrad moves nicely into side control.
Shewmaker is looking to regain half guard here but Conrad keeps moving and retains side control.

Shewmaker is looking to reverse the position.
Conrad has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Conrad controlling the position easily from mount.
Shewmaker is wriggling around trying to escape.
Conrad can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Shewmaker is looking to escape.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

That was a close round but I would say that Derek Conrad will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Conrad ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Conrad, as that shot connected.

Shewmaker closes the distance and pushes Conrad back into the cage.
Shewmaker tries a knee to the head but Conrad blocks it.

Conrad works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

Shewmaker is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Conrad defends well.
Shewmaker lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Conrad!

Shewmaker swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Conrad is now in Shewmaker's guard. A big mistake from Shewmaker there, giving up the dominant position!

Shewmaker is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Conrad is aware though and is defending well.

Conrad is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Shewmaker has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Conrad is looking to defend but Shewmaker has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Conrad! Shewmaker pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Conrad taps out and this one is all over!

Frank Shewmaker decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
