PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Apete Robinson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Black (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.

The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Donatello Bradman and Eliza Hachem.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Black misses with a double jab.

Robinson closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Robinson is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Black content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Black with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Black is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Black pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Robinson fails with a takedown attempt.
Black keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Robinson shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Black as he jumps to the side.

Both fighters circling a little - Black finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.

Black feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Robinson's calf.
Robinson avoids the head kick by Black.
Robinson takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Black fails in his attempt to clinch.

Black closes the distance and clinches.
Black is working for takedown but Robinson is calmly controlling the position for now.

Black jumps guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Robinson wants to control from the top but Black keeps moving.
Black has Robinson pulled in close to control his posture.
Robinson prevents Black from getting back to his feet.

Black wants to sweep but no luck.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Black throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Black darts in and clinches Robinson up against the cage.
Black tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Black goes for a takedown in the clinch but Robinson prevents it.

Robinson's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Black throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

and Black counters by moving into the clinch.

Robinson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Robinson blocks a head kick by Black.
Black tries to clinch but Robinson moves out of range.

Robinson forces Black back against the cage and clinches.

Robinson pulls guard.
Black won't allow Robinson to sweep him here.
Black wants to stand but Robinson has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Robinson will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Black really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Robinson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Black would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Robinson moves into the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

David Black dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Black blocks a head kick by Robinson.

Black gets a clinch.
Black tries to pull guard but Robinson holds him up against the cage and eventually Black drops back down to his feet.
Robinson putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Black in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.

Robinson jumps into guard, dragging Black to the mat.
Black tries to stand but Robinson is controlling from the bottom.
Black must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Black postures up.
Robinson has a closed guard, preventing Black from standing up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Black stands and steps away. Robinson gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Robinson tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Black swivels and escapes.
Black misses with a head kick.

Black has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Robinson off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Robinson has Black up against the cage in a clinch.
Black jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Robinson walks away with a smile on his face. Black gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Robinson feints and as Black raises his hands in defense, Robinson changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Robinson wants to pass the guard but Black is keeping the position.

Robinson stands up from guard. Let's bang!
No joy there for Black, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Robinson slips a jab and a cross from Black.
Robinson shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Robinson fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Apete Robinson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Robinson throws a head kick but Black moves out of range.
Robinson shoots in looking for a takedown. Black tries to sprawl out of it but Robinson keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Black manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

A shot to the liver by Black. Beautiful body shot.
Black has a takedown stuffed.

Robinson decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Black is trying to control but can't.
Robinson is taking a breather. Black says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Apete Robinson dominated that second round.
That's time! Robinson's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Black doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Black throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Robinson's head.
David Black seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Black tries to bum rush Robinson with a series of wild strikes but Robinson uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Black misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Robinson really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Robinson has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Black finds it's way round the side to connect with Robinson's head.
Black tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Robinson counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Black's guard now.
Black wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Robinson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Black swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Black trying to keep a closed guard but Robinson is proving a slippery customer.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Black wants to get back to his feet but Robinson is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Apete Robinson has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Robinson closes this distance looking for a takedown but Black circles away.
Black pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Black misses with an uppercut.
Robinson shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Robinson is defended easily by Black.

Robinson fails with an attempt to clinch.
Black tries to close the distance and clinch up but Robinson swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Black fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Robinson, pushing him back against the cage.
Robinson can't get the takedown.

Black manages to break the clinch.
Apete Robinson is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Black misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Black pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Robinson will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Horrible takedown by Robinson or perhaps it was just good defense by Black which made him look bad.
Black tries to clinch but Robinson moves out of range.
Robinson avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Black throws a right hand that Robinson ducks under and follows up with a left that Robinson also avoids with ease.

Black scores with a head kick. Robinson tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.

Robinson goes for a takedown attempt but Black pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Robinson closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Robinson lands in his opponent's guard.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Apete Robinson.
I think Robinson has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
