PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Ritchie Swiper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wayne McCullough (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Swiper kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genuis that is High Hopes. Wayne McCullough acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Ritchie Swiper!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Wayne McCullough!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, Donald Grub and Andrew Berry.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Swiper.
Nice shot lands for McCullough.
Swiper moves out of range of the leg kick from McCullough.
McCullough rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Swiper moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Swiper scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
McCullough tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Swiper wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Swiper is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. McCullough knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Swiper wants to take a breather but McCullough manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Swiper.
McCullough is looking to sweep but instead, Swiper has passed into half guard.
McCullough wants to get back to his feet.

McCullough is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Swiper scores with a couple of nice shots.

Swiper is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. McCullough doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Swiper.

Swiper is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Swiper is trying to control the action in half guard but McCullough is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Swiper is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and McCullough defends it well.
Swiper is breathing heavily.
Swiper tries to stand and escape but McCullough is controlling the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Swiper tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
McCullough tries a low kick but Swiper avoids it.

McCullough throws a right and a left that both miss.
Good work by Swiper as he checks the leg kick.

Swiper dodges the punch combination from McCullough.
Wayne McCullough seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
McCullough throws a leg kick but Swiper checks it.
Decent striking displayed by McCullough there.
A decent looking cross lands there for McCullough.
A right-left combo lands from McCullough.
Swiper ducks under a wild hook from McCullough.
McCullough looks to score with a jab to the body but Swiper is just out of range.

Swiper bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Swiper laying and praying for a moment but McCullough takes advantage and regains half guard.
Swiper uses his free foot to push down on McCullough's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for McCullough.

Swiper goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now McCullough is on top in guard.
Swiper looking to hit a scissor sweep but McCullough is one step ahead there.
McCullough looking to sit in guard and control but Swiper gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Swiper pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. McCullough is keeping the position for now.
McCullough is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

McCullough fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Swiper is out of range.

Swiper tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but McCullough swivels and escapes.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ritchie Swiper. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McCullough ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Swiper moves away.

No joy there for McCullough, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

McCullough misses with the combination.
McCullough is breathing heavily.

Swiper shoots in and drives through. McCullough sprawls well.

McCullough lands a nice shot that snaps Swiper's head back.

Swiper gets in close and instigates a clinch.
A left hand lands to the body for McCullough.
Swiper has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. McCullough is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Swiper ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Swiper no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

McCullough stands and steps away. Swiper gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

McCullough swings for the body but Swiper moves out of range.
McCullough swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Swiper changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. McCullough tries to avoid it but Swiper manages to keep hold of a leg and drag McCullough to the ground. McCullough escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Swiper shoots in and bounces McCullough off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Swiper is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because McCullough is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

McCullough wants to sweep here but Swiper controlling him for the moment.
McCullough manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Swiper manages to get himself to full guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Swiper has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but McCullough can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Swiper throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! McCullough escapes and throws Swiper's legs to the side, diving into side control!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Wayne McCullough will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Swiper looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Swiper takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Swiper is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

McCullough throws out a loose jab but Swiper uses good head movement to avoid it.

Swiper fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. McCullough sprawls well initially but Swiper persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

McCullough is looking to stand up but Swiper isn't so interested in that idea.
McCullough controls Swiper momentarily but Swiper frees himself.
Swiper pushes down on McCullough's leg and manages to get into half guard.

McCullough is trying to maintain the position but Swiper is very close to passing his half guard.
McCullough is staying active underneath Swiper, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
McCullough moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Swiper throws and elbow that misses. McCullough uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Swiper's guard. Nice move by McCullough!

McCullough has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Swiper is proving hard to escape from.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Swiper is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

I think McCullough has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
