PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Scott Carson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johnson Juarez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Juarez's choice of entrance music: SYSTEM OF A DOWN - Prison Song. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Scott Carson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Johnson Juarez!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Gregory Folan and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Juarez fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Carson avoids it really well and circles away.
Carson tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Juarez changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Carson tries to avoid it but Juarez manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Carson to the ground. Carson escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Juarez throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Carson sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Juarez shoots in but no luck this time.
Scott Carson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Johnson Juarez.
Juarez shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Carson as he jumps to the side.
Juarez looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Carson is fending him off so far but Juarez persists. Nope, Carson circles away and we're back to standing.
Juarez blocks a head kick by Carson.

A combination from Carson does no damage.
Scott Carson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Carson throws a big shot that misses.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Carson.
Juarez avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Carson misses with a wild body shot.
Scott Carson is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Carson misses with a head kick.
Carson goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Juarez looks to land a right hand but Carson moved out of range.
Carson swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Carson lands a jab to Juarez's midsection.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Carson slaps away a takedown attempt from Juarez, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Juarez shoots in for a double leg but Carson sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Juarez clinches up with Carson and pushes him back against the cage.

Juarez turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Juarez misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Carson on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Carson tries to get out of the position.
Carson wants to control but Juarez postures up.
Carson tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Juarez wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Juarez creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Carson sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Juarez looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Carson is trying to control Juarez's posture but Juarez avoids it.
Juarez is looking to take a break and control but Carson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Carson pushes Juarez away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Juarez gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Carson tries to buck Juarez off but Juarez is having none of it.

Juarez wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Carson, who protects the arm well.
Juarez looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Carson is avoiding damage well.

Juarez trying to control the position but Carson is working away.
Carson is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Juarez off and has taken his back!
Carson knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Juarez on the ground.
Carson is looking to control Juarez but Juarez is wriggling around and keeping busy.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Juarez is in bad spot here.
Carson is trying to stick to Juarez's back but Juarez is turning into Carson. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Carson's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Juarez.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Carson wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Juarez blocks a jab.
Juarez moves away from the strike by Carson.
Carson does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Juarez is trying hard to land a takedown here. Carson sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Carson misses the shot to the body.
Juarez tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Carson throws a right and a left that Juarez avoids nicely.

Juarez misses with a takedown attempt - Carson sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Carson pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Juarez scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Juarez is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Carson is just riding it out for now. Juarez eventually gives up the hold.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Carson wants to get back to his feet.

Juarez wants to work for an arm triangle but Carson is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Carson has his hands clasped together around Juarez's back. He's all about the action.

Carson kicks Juarez off and gets back to his feet.

Juarez moves out of range of the body kick from Carson.

Carson buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Carson throws a head kick but Juarez moves out of range.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Carson ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Juarez moves away.
Juarez shoots in for a takedown but Carson shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Carson throws a push kick but Juarez slaps the foot to one side.
Juarez tries to score a power double leg takedown but Carson sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Juarez somewhat.
Carson throws a nice looking combination but Juarez bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Carson slaps away a takedown attempt from Juarez, before circling back to the center of the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Juarez throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Carson's waist but Carson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Juarez off to one side.
Carson lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Juarez takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Carson tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Juarez was well out of range. Poor timing from Carson.
Carson throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Juarez's head.


It looks like Johnson Juarez has been cut.

Juarez fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Carson sprawls well initially but Juarez persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Juarez wants to work for an arm triangle but Carson is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Juarez is looking to stall here but Carson recovers full guard.

Carson is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Carson here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

Juarez wants to pass the guard but Carson is keeping the position.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Juarez pushes down on Carson's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Juarez throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Juarez not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Carson wants to get back to his feet.
Carson works his way to full guard. Good work.
Juarez postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Juarez throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Carson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Juarez throws an elbow that misses. Carson uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Juarez's guard. Nice move by Carson!
Juarez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Juarez has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Carson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Juarez swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Juarez escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Carson gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Scott Carson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Carson postures up.
Johnson Juarez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Carson won't allow Juarez to sweep him here.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Scott Carson.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Carson, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
