PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tom McGettigan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Taron Daegon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Taron Daegon has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Tom McGettigan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Taron Daegon!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, John Mangel and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Daegon rushes McGettigan and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
A nice left hand lands by Daegon.
McGettigan could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Daegon's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
McGettigan rushes in with a sloppy looking punch

and Daegon moves into the clinch.
McGettigan is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Daegon scores with an uppercut up the middle.

Daegon breaks from the clinch.

Daegon rushes McGettigan and presses him up against the cage.
Daegon lands a right hand that snaps the head of McGettigan backwards.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Daegon.

Daegon has dropped down and is working for a takedown. McGettigan is trying to keep an underhook but Daegon manages to get the takedown into half guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Daegon wants to lay and pray for a moment but McGettigan keeps working.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Daegon passes to side control.
Daegon controls the position.
McGettigan wants to get back to his feet but Daegon drags him back down.
Daegon just content to control the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Daegon wants to control but McGettigan is keeping him busy.
Daegon works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

Daegon working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Daegon in side control, just content to control the action for now.
McGettigan knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Daegon on the ground.
McGettigan tries to bench press Daegon off him but Daegon keeps the position.

Daegon prevents McGettigan from escaping the position.
McGettigan is breathing heavily.
Daegon wants to lay and pray for a moment but McGettigan keeps working.

Daegon tries for a kimura but McGettigan is defending well.
McGettigan tries to get back to half guard but can't.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
It looks like Daegon might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Daegon throws a strike aimed at the side of McGettigan's head but McGettigan avoids it well.
McGettigan manages to work his way to half guard, despite Daegon's best efforts.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Daegon is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Daegon connects with a nice short shot to McGettigan's temple.

Daegon stands up from half guard.
McGettigan misses with a left hand

and Daegon counters with a shoot takedown. McGettigan fights it but they end up in guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Daegon throwing strikes but missing.
Daegon is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Daegon decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on McGettigan, up you get!

Daegon shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. McGettigan manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
McGettigan wants to stand but Daegon is controlling the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Daegon pushes down on McGettigan's leg and manages to get into half guard.
McGettigan blocking the ground and pound attempt from Daegon.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Daegon works his way into full mount!

Daegon is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, McGettigan has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Daegon can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as McGettigan is looking to escape.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
McGettigan is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Taron Daegon dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Both fighters circling a little - Daegon finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.

Daegon manages to get an easy takedown there - catching McGettigan on his heels. He'll look to pass McGettigan's guard now, I'm sure.
Daegon working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Daegon has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Daegon chips away with some ground and pound.
Daegon has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Daegon drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Daegon jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Daegon passes McGettigan's left leg - he's now in half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
McGettigan avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Daegon.
Daegon throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Daegon is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for McGettigan!

Daegon is working for a guillotine from mount but McGettigan frees his head quite easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Daegon tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

McGettigan is looking to improve his position but Daegon isn't that keen on the idea.
Daegon throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for McGettigan because Daegon loaded up on that one.

Daegon working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
McGettigan is trying to get back to his feet but can't.

McGettigan is wriggling around trying to escape.

Daegon jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but McGettigan manages to avoid the submission attempt.

Daegon has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Nice defenses there by Daegon.
Daegon ducks under a wild hook from McGettigan.

Daegon drives through with a takedown into McGettigan's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

McGettigan might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Daegon is sneakily working for an arm triangle but McGettigan sees it coming and defends easily.

Daegon looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Daegon is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for McGettigan!
McGettigan is squirming around, avoiding Daegon's attempts to control the action.

Daegon is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, McGettigan has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Daegon takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Daegon sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Daegon lands with some vicious ground and pound - can McGettigan hang on?

McGettigan is desperately trying to improve his position but Daegon has a good base and remains in mount.
McGettigan wants to control but Daegon is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Taron Daegon showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

McGettigan scores with the left hand. Daegon knows he should have avoided that one.
Daegon shoots in for a takedown but McGettigan shows good takedown defense.
McGettigan throws out a loose jab but Daegon uses good head movement to avoid it.
Daegon uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from McGettigan.

Daegon gets the takedown into side control.
McGettigan is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Daegon has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for McGettigan!

McGettigan is flailing around, obviously not happy about being mounted. Daegon locks hold of one of his arms and spins for an armbar. He's got it! McGettigan is forced to tap!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:56 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Taron Daegon!
Taron Daegon decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
