PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Chael Sonnen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Money (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys are coming into the fight with injuries so let's see if that has a bearing on the fight. There are an array of beautiful celebrities at ringside tonight! I wonder if any of them paid for their tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Chael Sonnen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Joe Money!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sonnen gets caught flat footed, as Money shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Sonnen is breathing heavily.

Sonnen looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Money passes Sonnen's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Money trying to pass the guard but Sonnen defending well.
Money is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Sonnen trying to control but Money postures up.
Money content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Sonnen has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Money is working away from the top position though.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Money lands with a thumping leg kick.

Money shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Sonnen napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Money might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Sonnen kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Money tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Sonnen is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Sonnen is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Money is just riding it out for now. Sonnen eventually gives up the hold.

Sonnen is looking for a kimura but Money is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Sonnen to get the leverage.
Money tries to roll over but Sonnen keeps him under control.

Sonnen is working for a kimura but Money is defending it quite comfortably.
Money slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Money manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Sonnen manages to get himself to full guard.
Money wants to control from the top but Sonnen keeps moving.
Sonnen is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Money stands and throws Sonnen's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Money is looking to take a break and control but Sonnen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Sonnen is looking to reverse the position.
Sonnen prevents Money from moving into mount.
Sonnen tries to bench press Money off him but Money keeps the position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Money wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sonnen keeps working.
Sonnen gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sonnen throws out a loose jab but Money uses good head movement to avoid it.
Sonnen closes the distance and clinches up with Money, looking for a takedown. Sonnen pushes Money against the cage but Money circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Money shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Money was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Joe Money wasn't active enough on the ground.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Sonnen shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Money sprawls well. Money wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Sonnen gets slowly back to his feet.

Money moves into range and clinches up with Sonnen.
A nice left hand lands by Sonnen.

Money turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Money manages to end up in side control.
Sonnen stops Money from passing to mount.

Money has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Sonnen changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Money tries to avoid it but Sonnen manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Money to the ground. Money escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Sonnen is looking for a sweep.

Sonnen pushes Money away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Money gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Sonnen is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Money is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Money sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Sonnen's guard.

Joe Money is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Well Money has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
