PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kevin Gold (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johnny Cobra (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cobra has chosen Calm Like a Bomb as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kevin Gold!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Johnny Cobra!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Tiny Johnson and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cobra shoots for a takedown but Gold saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Cobra misses with a takedown attempt - Gold sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Gold closes the distance and clinches.
Gold prevents the takedown attempt.
Kevin Gold has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Johnny Cobra.
Gold is looking to control Cobra's arms but Cobra gets an underhook and turns him. Now Gold has his back to the cage.

Gold manages to pull guard.

Cobra drops back, looking for a kneebar! Gold looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Gold looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Gold!
Cobra is looking to regain half guard here but Gold keeps moving and retains side control.
Gold throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gold throws an elbow but Cobra slips to the side and avoids it well.
Cobra is not content to let Gold control the position.
Cobra tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gold wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Cobra is not content to let Gold control the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cobra tries to bench press Gold off him but Gold keeps the position.
Gold has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Gold is looking to take a break and control but Cobra is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gold thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Cobra is not content to let Gold control the position.
Gold fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Gold wants to control but Cobra is keeping him busy.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Cobra can do anything to dispel that myth.

Gold stands up and beckons Cobra to his feet.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Cobra is defended easily by Gold.

Gold stuffs the takedown attempt from Cobra. Cobra gets slowly back to his feet.
Cobra fails with a takedown attempt.

Gold clinches up with Cobra and pushes him back against the cage.
Gold prevents a takedown attempt there.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Gold has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Cobra is trying to keep an underhook but Gold manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Cobra looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Cobra looks gassed!

Cobra looking for submissions off his back.
Gold wants to take a breather but Cobra is having none of it.
Gold is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Gold is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Cobra is just riding it out for now. Gold eventually gives up the hold.
Gold is trying to control. Cobra wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Gold stands up from half guard.

Gold manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Cobra on his heels. He'll look to pass Cobra's guard now, I'm sure.
Gold stays in close to Cobra's body and controls the position.
Gold advances position into side control!
Cobra is trying to get back to half guard.
Gold throws an elbow but Cobra slips to the side and avoids it well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Cobra tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Gold trying to control the position but Cobra is working away.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Cobra is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Cobra is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Cobra really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gold. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Gold tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Cobra managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Gold.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Gold working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kevin Gold dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Cobra shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Gold pinned against the cage. Gold gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Cobra has his takedown stuffed

and Gold decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Cobra's guard.
Gold would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Gold trying to control the position from guard on top but Cobra is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Gold is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Cobra is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Cobra is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Gold passes into half guard.

Gold stands up and beckons Cobra to join him on the feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cobra shoots in looking for a takedown. Gold tries to sprawl out of it but Cobra keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Gold manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Kevin Gold has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Johnny Cobra.
Cobra shoots in for a takedown but Gold shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Cobra is breathing heavily.

Gold drives through with a takedown into Cobra's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Gold is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Cobra keeping moving, preventing Gold from controlling successfully.
Gold advances to half guard.
Gold is trying to control the action in half guard but Cobra is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Gold wants to control but Cobra is keeping him busy.

Gold is working for a kimura but Cobra is defending it quite comfortably.

Cobra is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Gold pulls his head out easily.

Gold stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Cobra to get to his feet.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Cobra shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Cobra.

Gold forces Cobra back against the cage and clinches.
Gold stalling in the clinch but Cobra improves position.
A frustrated look appears on Gold's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Cobra is working for takedown but Gold is calmly controlling the position for now.

Gold manages to pull guard.
Kevin Gold overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Gold is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Cobra frees his head nicely. Oh but Gold has switched to an armbar! Cobra is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
