PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Roberto Cruz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Viper Drakes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Roberto Cruz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Winston Howard and Steve Erwin.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cruz shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Drakes sprawls well. Drakes wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Cruz gets slowly back to his feet.
Cruz could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Cruz changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Drakes looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Cruz goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Drakes has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Cruz but great work by Drakes.
Drakes trying to control the position but Cruz is working away.
Cruz defending against the ground and pound.

Drakes is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Cruz knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Cruz tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Drakes wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Drakes stands up and beckons Cruz to his feet.
Drakes scores with a slapping inside leg kick.

Drakes throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.

Drakes scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Drakes is looking for a kimura here.
Cruz tries to get to full guard but Drakes has control of the leg.
Drakes thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Cruz's head.
Drakes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cruz keeps working.
Cruz on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Cruz tries to get out of the position.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cruz is breathing heavily.
Cruz trying to control but Drakes postures up.
Drakes missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Drakes is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Cruz knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Drakes on the ground.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Cruz is staying active underneath Drakes, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Viper Drakes.
An inside leg kick lands from Drakes.
A kick lands to the mid section there for Drakes.
Drakes displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Cruz.

Drakes throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Cruz tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Drakes is in Cruz's guard.
Drakes wants to stand but Cruz is controlling his posture from full guard.
Cruz not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Drakes makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Drakes trying to control the position from guard on top but Cruz is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Viper Drakes has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Drakes shoots in and bounces Cruz off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Drakes wants to control from the top but Cruz keeps moving.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Drakes wants to stand and escape but instead Cruz has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Viper Drakes dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Cruz throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Drakes's waist but Drakes gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Cruz off to one side.

Drakes feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Cruz is rocked!
Drakes is pushing down on Cruz's leg trying to pass to half guard. Cruz is fighting to maintain full guard but Drakes has managed to sneak the leg through.
Oh Cruz is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Drakes looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Drakes scores with a big shot! Cruz's head bounced off the canvas with a huge thud! More strikes land and the referee has jumped in to save Cruz! He was hurt real bad - good stoppage!
