PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jim Smithers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Justin Jackson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Jim Smithers has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Jim Smithers seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jim Smithers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Justin Jackson!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Yves DeLean and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smithers shoots in for a takedown but Jackson shows good takedown defense.
Jackson attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Jackson connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.

Smithers closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Smithers lands in his opponent's guard.
Smithers is looking to advance position but Jackson has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Smithers is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Jackson has hold of Smithers's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Smithers manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Smithers wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
Jackson doesn't have the hooks in and Smithers manages to turn into his guard.

Smithers stands and throws Jackson's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Smithers will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Jackson gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Jackson is trying desperately to improve position.

Smithers goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Jackson turns into him and now he's in Smithers's guard.

Smithers has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Jackson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Smithers is looking for a sweep. Jackson is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Jackson trying to control from half guard but Smithers is working away.

Smithers looking to break Jackson's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Jackson remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Smithers will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

Jackson can't find room to land a body shot as Smithers controls the action.

Smithers is working for a kimura but Jackson is defending it quite comfortably.

Jackson tries to roll over but Smithers keeps him under control.

Smithers is looking to advance position but Jackson won't allow it.
Smithers thows a big elbow that misses, also allowing Jackson to regain full guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Jackson looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Smithers fails with the takedown.
Jim Smithers is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Smithers closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Smithers tries for a kimura but Jackson is defending well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Smithers tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Smithers has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Smithers is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Jackson is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Jackson sneaks back into half guard.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Smithers in particular looking to stall.

Smithers is working for a submission of some sort.

Jackson looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Smithers wants to pass the guard but Jackson is defending well.

Smithers looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Horrible takedown by Smithers or perhaps it was just good defense by Jackson which made him look bad.
Jackson tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Jackson throws a nice outside leg kick.

Jackson moves into the clinch.
Smithers goes for a takedown attempt but Jackson pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Smithers fails to land the takedown.

Jackson drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Smithers lands the left hand.
Smithers shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Jackson as he jumps to the side.
Jackson tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Smithers paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Smithers moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Jackson has worked his arm free - good work by Jackson!
Smithers is trying to move to mount but Jackson reverses beautifully and ends up in Smithers's guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Smithers wants to control but Jackson is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Jackson is looking for a kimura but Smithers is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Jackson to get the leverage.

Jim Smithers showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Smithers, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
