PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Todd Straub (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chuck Wagon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wagon has chosen Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man as his entrance music. Todd Straub had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Todd Straub!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Chuck Wagon!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Colin Fray and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wagon will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Wagon dives in and grabs Straub's left leg, looking for a takedown. Straub pushes down on Wagon's head and hops out.

and Straub counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Straub.
Todd Straub has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chuck Wagon.

Straub is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wagon has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Todd Straub.
Wagon shoots in and drives through. Straub sprawls well.

Straub instigates a clinch.
Wagon keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Straub's efforts to push away.

Wagon works on Straub's body with a couple of short punches.
Wagon prevents Straub from breaking the clinch.

Straub has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Wagon is trying to keep an underhook but Straub manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Straub seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Wagon does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Straub connects with a nice short shot to Wagon's temple.

Straub looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Wagon with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Straub throwing shots but Wagon is blocking nicely.
Wagon tries to roll over but Straub keeps him under control.

Straub decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Wagon shoots in for a double leg but Straub sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Wagon shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Straub but Straub pushes him off and we're back to square one.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Straub wants to lay and pray for a moment but Wagon keeps working.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Straub tries to pass the half guard into mount. Wagon knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Wagon closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Straub quickly recovers to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Straub is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Wagon seems to be working for a kimura but Straub defends the submission attempt.

Wagon is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Straub doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Wagon.
Straub moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Straub bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Wagon's guard.

Straub throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Wagon has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Straub is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Wagon.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Todd Straub just wasn't active enough.

Straub shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Wagon napping and manages to drive through into side control!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Wagon is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Well, if Straub is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Straub can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Wagon is looking to escape.

Wagon is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Straub cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Wagon shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Straub as he jumps to the side.
Wagon wants to clinch but Straub slips to the side
and Straub counters with a two punch combo.
Wagon closes this distance looking for a takedown but Straub circles away.
Straub moves in looking to clinch but Wagon pushes him off.
Wagon misses with a takedown attempt - Straub sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Wagon is defended easily by Straub.
Wagon takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Straub feints and as Wagon raises his hands in defense, Straub changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Wagon wants to stand up but Straub is controlling him.

and Straub counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Wagon shoots in looking for a takedown. Straub tries to sprawl out of it but Wagon keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Straub manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Straub decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Straub takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Straub lands a big shot there that rocks Wagon but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Straub wants to control but instead Wagon manages to regain half guard.
Straub is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Chuck Wagon has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Well Straub has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
