PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bill Champ (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ralf Krause (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Bill Champ!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ralf Krause!
The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Krause misses with a body shot.
Champ misses the jab.
Champ throws a lazy right hand but Krause sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Nice sprawl there from Champ as Krause shoots in.
Krause connects with a high kick.
Champ lands a jab to the nose.
Champ throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Krause slips a jab from Champ.
Krause tries to clinch up.
Champ cracks Krause with an open hand slap.
Champ defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Krause.
Champ stuffs the takedown.
Bill Champ has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ralf Krause.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Krause closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Champ did well to prevent Krause getting side control.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Bill Champ wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Krause avoids the body shot from Champ.

Champ moves into range and connects with a jab.
Champ is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
Champ looks to land a combination but Krause avoids it well.
Krause shoots in for a takedown but Champ shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Krause doesn't manage to clinch there - Champ circles away.
Krause loads up on a big right hand but Champ slips the punch.

Champ looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Krause is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Champ jumps into side control!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

You can see the frustration on Krause's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Krause manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Champ trying to hold on to Krause's head to control him but Krause postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bill Champ dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Krause fails with the takedown
enabling Champ to counter with a crisp jab.
Krause tries to score a power double leg takedown but Champ sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Krause somewhat.
Champ fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Krause manages to avoid it.
Bill Champ seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Krause changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Champ tries to avoid it but Krause manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Champ to the ground. Champ escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Bill Champ has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ralf Krause.
Krause takes one on the button.
Krause takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Krause gets cracked there but stands up to it.
The fight stays on the outside here - Krause looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Donk. Champ catches Krause right on the button with a cross.
Krause takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
A combination from Champ does no damage.

Champ cracks Krause with a good jab.
Krause tries to clinch but Champ moves out of range.
Krause dives in and grabs Champ's left leg, looking for a takedown. Champ pushes down on Krause's head and hops out.
Krause throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Krause takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Krause is looking to clinch.
Krause tries to clinch there but Champ circles away.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Champ.

Champ connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Krause slaps away a takedown attempt from Champ, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Krause needs to keep his hands up - Champ had a free shot at his head there.

Krause looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Champ!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Champ tries to lock up and control but Krause gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Champ is squirming around, avoiding Krause's attempts to control the action.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Krause tries to close the distance and clinch up but Champ swats him away and circles back towards the center.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Champ scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Krause doesn't seem bothered though.
Krause walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Champ swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Champ scores with a jab. Krause acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Champ fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Krause fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Champ has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Krause tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Champ tests Krause's chin there with a solid looking shot.

Krause doesn't manage to clinch there - Champ circles away.

Krause rushes Champ and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

A head punch on the inside from Champ fails to land.

Krause pulls guard successfully.

Krause working for submissions but it's allowed Champ to get to half guard.
Krause wants to get back to full guard.

Champ is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Krause doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Champ.
Champ takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Krause is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Champ pulls his head out easily.
Krause tries to roll over but Champ keeps him under control.

Krause tries to kick Champ off but Champ keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Krause has a hand on Champ's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Champ takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
Champ prevents Krause from getting the reversal.
Krause slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

Champ prevents Krause from standing back up.
Krause takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Krause is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Champ looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Bill Champ just wasn't active enough.
Nice body punch from Champ.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Champ throws a wild body kick that Krause sees coming a mile off.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Bill Champ.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Champ, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
