PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Joseph Di Maio (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tom Henke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Di Maio comes to the cage accompanied by Manowar - Sign of the Hammer. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Joseph Di Maio!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Tom Henke!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Henke keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Henke lands a lovely overhand right.
Henke missing with a left hand there. Di Maio was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Di Maio.
Di Maio closes the distance and clinches up with Henke, looking for a takedown. Di Maio pushes Henke against the cage but Henke circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joseph Di Maio. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Di Maio looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Henke scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Good leg kick by Henke there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Di Maio is breathing heavily.
A jab from Henke does it's job there.
A thudding body kick lands there by Henke!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Henke swinging wilding here.
Henke moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.

Henke thows a body shot but no joy.
Di Maio fails with the takedown.
Henke lands a right hook to the body.
Henke scores with a shot to the body.
Horrible takedown by Di Maio or perhaps it was just good defense by Henke which made him look bad.

Di Maio shoots in but Henke avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Henke dips to his left and cracks Di Maio with an uppercut!
Nice combo by Henke! Oh, that's hurt him - Di Maio falls to the canvas and Henke follows him into side control.


Di Maio is rocked!
Di Maio tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Henke presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Oh Di Maio is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Let's hope that Henke has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Di Maio seems to have got his legs back now.
Di Maio working to try and regain half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tom Henke dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


The crowd cheers as Henke lands an impressive looking overhand right. Di Maio doesn't seem phased though.
Henke lands a really nice looking cross but Di Maio seems unphased.
Di Maio shoots in but no luck this time.
Tom Henke seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Di Maio gets the takedown into side control.
Di Maio lands some shots froms side control.
A bit of a lull in the action here.

Di Maio is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Henke knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Di Maio tries to advance to mount but can't.
Henke wants to control but Di Maio postures up.

Di Maio thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Di Maio working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Di Maio swings around for an armbar but Henke sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Di Maio's guard.
Henke stays in close to Di Maio's body and controls the position.
Henke really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Di Maio. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Henke trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Di Maio working for a triangle but Henke defends it easily.
Di Maio wants to sweep but no luck.

Di Maio keeping moving, preventing Henke from controlling successfully.

Di Maio is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Henke stays in close to Di Maio's body and controls the position.

Di Maio is looking for a triangle here but Henke uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Di Maio looks to move to half guard but instead Henke has passed into mount! Damn!
Di Maio is working to get back to half guard.
Henke controlling his opponent.
Di Maio is in all sorts of trouble here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tom Henke showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. And we move into the final round!


Henke drops Di Maio with a right and a left! Henke comes rushing in but Di Maio regains his composure and manages to keep Henke in guard.


It looks like Joseph Di Maio has been cut.
Henke is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Di Maio is looking for a triangle but Henke pushes his legs off easily.
Di Maio trying to control the position.
Henke is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Di Maio has an active guard here but Henke has managed to pass into half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Di Maio is looking to control Henke's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Di Maio avoid being mounted?
Di Maio is looking to improve his position.
Henke is taking a breather. Di Maio says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Di Maio looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

Di Maio looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Henke perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Di Maio is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Henke looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Di Maio looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Henke in particular looking to stall.
Di Maio wants to get back to full guard but Henke has mounted him!
Di Maio is looking to get to half guard.
Henke looking to control and managing it successfully.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Di Maio is desperately trying to improve his position but Henke has a good base and remains in mount.
Joseph Di Maio has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Henke takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Di Maio keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Tom Henke comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Henke has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
