PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Roman Abramov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jakub Kowalczyk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Abramov kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Sex Machine. Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Roman Abramov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jakub Kowalczyk!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, John Mangel and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kowalczyk closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Kowalczyk goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Jakub Kowalczyk seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kowalczyk misses with a takedown attempt - Abramov sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Horrible takedown by Abramov or perhaps it was just good defense by Kowalczyk which made him look bad.
Abramov shoots in for a takedown but Kowalczyk shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Kowalczyk keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Roman Abramov. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Abramov has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Kowalczyk after a bit of a struggle.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Kowalczyk missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Kowalczyk must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Kowalczyk throws a big elbow that misses.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kowalczyk accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Kowalczyk postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Abramov is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Kowalczyk, into his guard.
Abramov seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Abramov postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Kowalczyk avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Abramov has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Abramov working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Abramov slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Kowalczyk really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Abramov. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Kowalczyk is looking to reverse the position.
An elbow from Abramov crashes against the mat.

Abramov looks up at the clock and then as Kowalczyk takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Abramov smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Kowalczyk takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Abramov is looking to take a break and control but Kowalczyk is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Kowalczyk taking punishment in the form of punches.
Kowalczyk takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Kowalczyk wants to get back to his feet.
Abramov happy to just control the position for now.

Abramov has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Horrible takedown by Abramov or perhaps it was just good defense by Kowalczyk which made him look bad.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Abramov shoots for a takedown but Kowalczyk saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Roman Abramov will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Kowalczyk throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Abramov stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Kowalczyk.
Kowalczyk stuffs the takedown attempt from Abramov. Abramov gets slowly back to his feet.
Kowalczyk is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Abramov throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Kowalczyk's waist but Kowalczyk gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Abramov off to one side.
Kowalczyk keeps the fight on the outside.

Abramov closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Abramov lands in his opponent's guard.

Kowalczyk is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Roman Abramov.
Abramov swats away the attempt to clinch by Kowalczyk.

Abramov shoots in and bounces Kowalczyk off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Abramov tries to free his leg and advance position but Kowalczyk is retaining full guard.
Kowalczyk has momentary wrist control but Abramov slips an elbow through the middle.

Kowalczyk darts in and clinches Abramov up against the cage.

Abramov is keen to just control but Kowalczyk is a slippery customer.
Abramov lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Abramov works his way into side control.

Abramov wants to take a breather but Kowalczyk manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Abramov.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Abramov is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Kowalczyk defends it well.

That's time! Abramov's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Abramov shoots in for a double leg but Kowalczyk sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Abramov fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Kowalczyk avoids it really well and circles away.

Kowalczyk drives through and clinches with Abramov against the cage.

Kowalczyk gets control of Abramov's arms and successfully pulls guard. Kowalczyk will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Kowalczyk escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Abramov gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Abramov throws a strike but Kowalczyk rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Abramov wriggles free and stands up.
Kowalczyk dives in and grabs Abramov's left leg, looking for a takedown. Abramov pushes down on Kowalczyk's head and hops out.
Kowalczyk shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Kowalczyk looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Abramov is fending him off so far but Kowalczyk persists. Nope, Abramov circles away and we're back to standing.
Kowalczyk defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Abramov.
Abramov misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Kowalczyk shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Abramov defends it nicely.

Kowalczyk lands with a thumping leg kick.

Abramov wants to pass the guard but Kowalczyk is keeping the position.

Abramov thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Jakub Kowalczyk has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Roman Abramov is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

I would just about give that final round to Jakub Kowalczyk.

After the fight, Roman Abramov was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
