We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
McHale slips a nice elbow through Pynchon's hands, connecting with Pynchon's forehead.

McHale is trying to control. Pynchon wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

McHale has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with McHale in particular looking to stall.
McHale thows a huge punch but Pynchon dodges it nicely.
McHale is trying to control the action in half guard but Pynchon is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Pynchon is looking for a sweep. McHale is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Pynchon is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Pynchon can do anything to dispel that myth.
Pynchon holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.

McHale is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Pynchon is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of McHale's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take McHale's back!

Pynchon postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. McHale looks a forlorn figure.
Pynchon really doesn't want to stay on the ground with McHale. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Pynchon connects with a couple of good shots from mount.


It looks like Beaumont McHale has been cut.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Beaumont McHale's cut is getting worse.
Pynchon has his opponent pinned against the ropes, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of McHale's face.


Jeez, Beaumont McHale's cut is really nasty now. The referee must be thinking about getting that checked.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Beaumont McHale's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Thomas Pynchon!
